My NAFO name tag lanyard makes for a great spare key holder. On any long rides out of town, it hangs around my neck.
I use one of those lanyards that is a long loop of that coiled plastic, like a tiny old phone cord. One end has a keyring and the other a spring loaded hoop clip thingy. When I put the key in the ignition I loop the coil around the right handlebar and clip the thingy to the keyring...So even if the key is pulled out of the ignition it is still tethered to the bike...the coiled plastic can stretch enough to open the gas cap if needed.
Looped on itself the coil can be be slipped around my wrist, cliped to a zipper or belt loop, or even worn around my neck when I take the key with me off the bike. I have tried many devices and key rings but this seems to work the best for me. YMMV.
