Maker's Mark waters down bourbon to meet demand

The bourbon producer, known for its signature red wax-sealed bottles, is watering down its whiskey in an effort to meet rising global demand.

The change was first announced in a letter from company executives to loyal customers.

"Fact is, demand for our bourbon is exceeding our ability to make it, which means we're running very low on supply," wrote Rob Samuels, the company COO.

Samuels said that "after looking at all possible solutions," the company was reducing alcohol by volume by 3%.

However, it seems likely that alcohol by volume will instead be reduced by three percentage points. Prior to the announced change, Maker's Mark was 45% alcohol by volume, and according to company literature, the bourbon is now 42% alcohol by volume, a reduction of 6.7%.

Just read that online. I'm OK with it. I'll stick to Crown Royal Black, thank you.

(Full disclosure: I had an excessive experience with 101-proof Yukon Jack (another slightly sweet liquor) when I was 18 or 19, and any slightly sweetened whiskey or bourbon makes my stomach jump like a kangaroo. Had to wash the side of the '68 Plymouth Fury the next morning. Yuck.)

So... snakebites are out for you I guess?

Never developed a taste for bourbon. I'm a Rum man myself. DonQ Gran Anejo is the nectar of the Gods. Girlfriend is from Tennessee. She loves that stuff. Wild Turkey 101 when she wants to get hammered. Crown Royal when she doesn't. Doesn't matter to me either way! :)

I'm with you '****.. I never cared for bourbon of any type.
So THAT's why you didn't drink my bottle o' booze when I overnighted in the land de Owosso!
Yes I did you bonedik.. Two shots was all though, I knew Toronto the following day was going to be rough enough without a hangover.

IIRC It was Seagram's ?

In 1987 I had the pleasure of visiting the Makers Mark Distillery. It was awesome. We met the mom of the family. She showed us around the whole place. We even got to sample some of the product straight off the bottling machine. They had finished bottling for the day and were just about to start the clean up, so it was ok to put a finger on the filling machine.

Last year I went back and it sucked. It is totally commercial now. When I was riding around, I stopped at the maintance garage and asked "what happened"? They told me they were bought out by Jim Beam a while back. The family is gone and now it is fake tourism cr@p. It's sad. They still make a great product, but I am not surprised to hear that big papa "Jim Beam" is watering it down. Anything for a buck.

Was I given bad info? Is the family still involved? I would feel a lot better to know that they were still involved. The woman we met that day was super nice.

Beam, Inc. does manage Makers as well as Knob Creek, Basil Haydens and Bookers and, of course, Jim Beam on the low end, However the Samuels family is still in charge of the distillary.

I stick with Eagle Rare, thanks.

And what's with the Rum, Crown Royal, et al?

Stop raiding your parent's liquor cabinet and

we'll let you sit at the adult table.

Lmao! Crown is for the girlfriend from Chattanooga. Rum is for me. There's some real good grown up Rum out there. Live a little and try some. The Pirates of the Caribbean got it right and they had plenty of grown ups among them! Just Sayin' :)
