Back in 1987 there was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge. They closed the bridge to all but pedestrian traffic for the day. So many people were out there they flattened the bridge so much the authorities had to call off the event and chase everybody off. There are plenty of links, but here's one. Amazing. Cool vid. Wheatie, you designed that bridge? Nice job!

Nope, but the other post said "it must be cool to design such things"...and it is. I've designed a railroad bridge, a timber pedestrian bridge, a 160ft high bell tower, besides your typical run of the mill structures of 10 stories or less. Height or shape is no limitation on the ability to design, just the client's pocketbook.

BTW, the engineer who designed the Golden Gate Bridge was from the University of Illinois. Good school, if I must say so myself. :)

I've driven across the Manhattan bridge many times and felt the action caused by heavy trucks and sometimes trains. I never realized that it was moving that much. Cool video.
