My wife and I are considering moving to the Sacramento region in order to be closer to Oregon and maybe cheaper golf. The Country Club we belong to raised monthly dues over ten percent and may make us become equity members costing us another 100+ dollars per month. There was no warning of these increases and we went through the same thing about four years ago. We quit, but came back after four years because we got tired of driving to other golf facilities.

We don't want to play at any of the other golf courses in the Coachella Valley and would like to have a closer drive from our home in Salem, Oregon. Any help about the area would be appreciated. Things like how is the weather, housing and any other pertinent information.

Thanks ahead of time

Jer

I don't golf but there are plenty of places to golf in Sac and the foothills. You can have frost delays in the winter but usually they are on the course around 10am. I suspect our winter daytime temps will be lower than down south but 50-60's are pleasant.

Are you looking to be IN the Sacramento metro area? The Sacramento Valley can have fog in the winter during the wet years whereas living in the foothills between 1000-2000' will keep you above the fog and below the snow 98% of the time. Both Auburn or Placerville are nice areas and have easy access to Sac via the freeway.

Housing will be a bit higher as you move up the hill but is worth it to be above the city folk.

Does it show I'm a country boy?

I can make it to Salem in a easy day from here.

I don't know what is considered cheap membership when it comes to golf. The golf club here in town charges $299-$399/month for individual or family memberships, so you can compare.

We are currently paying $839 per month and if they pass the proposal that non-equity members must become equity members the monthly cost will go up to over $1000 dollars per month. I am sure we will find golf a lot cheaper and the high cost here is a reason for looking up North.

Thanks for the replies and for some reason I can't get the quote button to work.

Coming down to California we spend the night in Santa Nella and going back to Salem spend the night in Redding. That makes Sacramento a breeze.

The golf club in town is a public access golf course with day use and membership rates. It is not a country club. I am talking about the Empire Ranch Golf course.

The nearest country club to me is Serrano Country club and it has a limited number of full golf membership (450 total). I have no idea how much that costs.

Just remember Jer if you do move to the Sacramento area, keep your wallet in your front pocket around the NorCal Crowd FJR Forum guys like Old Michael, Bokerfork and MadMike2! jes' sayin' and nuff said!

More details about your expectations in housing, land and lifestyle would help. FWIW you can buy on a golf course at "reasonable" costs, but your question is more logically directed to a Sacramento area realtor than to a bunch of retrobates that like to ride in the foothills in winter.

I believe Russperry will confirm that I am the person you need to watch around your wallet, and I went to PA.

We will probably try to drive down there this summer and spend a few days looking around. I mainly am feeling out those that live in the area about how they feel about the climate and their happiness there. Looks like I will have to show up for rides with an empty wallet. That should be easy with the tiny allowance my wife gives me.

Be careful about feeling out that crew, they might like it. Bring a full wallet cause there is lots to do and great food and drink. Above all, don't let anyone talk you into riding to Tahoe or doing "pass" rides. You will be forever hooked.

Well weather is pretty good, you can expect at least a dozen days over a hundred , nothing too cold in the winter , we just had a cold spell hovering around freezing. Not a golfer so can't help you there , but lots of courses .

People ask me why I moved to sac, my answer is there's really not that much here, so generally low crime, but your 1 to 2 hours to Yosemite, tahoe, the coast, the redwoods up north, etc.

It does suffer from urban sprawl, well up the 50 and 80 corridor anyway. If I was going to go to Oregon regularly, I would probably live auburn (80) side of town, if you need the airport , that is that side too.

House prices were hit by the economy, but they are recovering and recovering fast where I live , el dorado hills.

Of course this all my opinion, I have only lived here 15 years so not a native.

Jeeze Jer, I love ya man, but you would pick up and move your entire life for Golf? Seriously?? You have a disease!

Edited to add: You need to take up shooting. It's cheaper and way more fun!! $900/month to chase a white ball around?? Holy Hell...

+1 and more.

Tried golf on a number of occasions. Okay for about 3 holes. After that, you quickly realize what an assinine game it is. On top of that you realize there are 15 more holes to complete.

Oh well, Every pun intended,,, Different strokes for different folks.

Jer, you should just move to Albuquerque. Every Indian Casino within 30 miles has a golf course. We have Ladera, Arroyo Del Oso and the world renowned UNM Golf Course. AND I'm here. We could drink beer and chase women on the weekends.

AJ that is why we are moving, because of the price of golf here. When we first joined it was only $500 per month and for two people playing 4 days a week each that wasn't bad. Now they are asking double that and we decided we won't pay. As far as shooting, I would get bored with that in a hurry.

Oh by the was don't try to get me to move to Albuquerque because I have seen most of it on the TV show breaking bad and another show about people being in protective custody in Albuquerque.

My residence will still be Salem, Oregon, but this area will get us away from the rain. I am not sure what you mean by moving my entire life for golf. This area will give me some great riding in the winter and I will continue to ride out of Oregon in the summer.
