I am now riding on my third set of Metzlers, and no complaints. Each set was good for 10 - 12 KMiles. I'll be replacing them with the "new" Z6's this summer. WBill

Please... someone tell me how to get more than 5K on a set of tires on the FJR...tried several brands, never get more than 5K and the front and rear wear out at the same time...several posters in this thread claim to have the answer...is it roads, riding style, tire pressure, or all just damn lies??? [/hijack]

I'm in the Metzeler Z6's suck camp...

 after viewing all the comments and the tread wear indicator article I think I'll go for the sportec z-6 made specificly for the fjr

I bought the FJR a year ago, used, I have no idea as to how many miles are on these tires. They are Metzeler Roadtec Z6, there isn't any tread in the center of the tire only on the sides.

My concern is how do I know when to replace the tires?

I checked the Metzeler web site but didn't get any usable information about tread wear.

The treads on the sides of the tire show no wear but the center is starting to show a flat area.

I'm planning a weekend get away in May and wonder if I should replace the tires before then.

Any suggestion?
after reading all the reply's and the article about twi I think I'll buy the sportec z-6's but I'll make sure they are the ones made just for the fjr yamaha as they weigh 2lbs more than the regular ones

Another way to gague whether or not a tire should be retired is to let all the air out. With the air out of the tire you can push in with your thumb on the most worn area in the middle, then work your way out to the edge and compare how much is gone. It is scary sometimes how little rubber we are riding on.

I haven't loged on in several weeks, so I didn't get to read all the replys.

So thanks to all who replied.

After taking a closer look at the tires I decide to get a set of Pilot Road 2.

I took them for a ride to day and I'm happy with the tires. Another long ride tomorrow up to the Poppy Reserve and the Rock Inn.

The tires looked pretty much like the tires in Pete's post, so yes it was time to replace them, and with the new tires I now know now many miles are on them and I don't have to guess.

I ordered the tires on line from https://www.jcmotors.com/ which is having a pre-summer sale if anyone is interested.

Thanks Again

Randy

I got 12000 miles from my OEM Z6s. Travelled over all kinds of roads except dirt and for most of those miles the FJR was heavily loaded with me (230 lbs.) and a full set of camping gear (100lbs.?). The front tire is showing definite signs of wear and the rear is probably good for a few hundred more miles but I'll be replacing them with the new Z6 Interacts before the bike goes back on the road in a few weeks.

If you should decide to get the Interacts for your FJR, be sure to order the "OEM replacement" version. These are beefed up to handle the torque and weight of the FJR. The front tire has a "G" designation and the Metzler part # is 0303-0093. The rear tire has a "C" designation and the Metzler part # is 0304-0096. You can use the part numbers with your dealer to make sure you are getting the OEM version.

Metzelers suck. I think you are going to enjoy you Pilot Road IIs.

JC Motors price of $339 (+shipping?) is not such a bargain. Derby cycle or Southwest Moto Tire is where to shop.
Yeah Well, it's a bit late now the tires are on the bike.

My Mechanic said it was a good price when I asked him about it, so that is what I was going by.

And you are right about the Road Pilot II, I take back every negative thing I said about the way my FJR handles.

What a difference!

I am on my fourth set of tires with 14000 miles, the bike is so heavy I think it is just hard on front tires. I wasnt happy with stock Metzlers cupped real bad down the center and caused a scary wobble in the front. Second set no better, have switched now to Dunlops and now running 42 PSI in the front seems to be stopping the bad cupping problem. The beast is just hard on front tires or its a combination of my hard riding and the splitting lanes on the freeways in Los Angeles.

just FYI - motorcycle superstore is $171 shipped for a rear 180/55 PR2 - which is about $20 less than JCs pre season sale price... ?

QUESTION - anyone ever considered running a PR2 170/60? seems to me (being slightly rounder/ taller) it might make the bike feel a TAD lighter and add a bit more flickability?

I got 11000 out of the front z6 with life still left and the rear is still on a 12000. When measured with tred gauge compared to the new one in my shop it has better than a third of tread left. I like them but I am old and slow.

same here replaced the mich. pilot roads with sport tec z-6 specifically for the fjr c spec for rear if you compare with other new tires off the rim you cannot push in the center tread of the metzler they weigh at least 2lbs. more. if you look at the sides you will see twi written you follow that around the tire to see if it is worn as there is no center tread on the tire at all that's why they last longer! from an older fjr rider
