Age? It's a mind over matter thing, if you don't mind it don't matter. I'm hanging on to 54 for just a few more weeks, 55 is going to be traumatic for me, I'll be closer to 60 than to 50 :dribble:

On a brighter note, I've got some photos up I took 93 pics along the way some were bonuses some were just scenery.

DaJuice mentioned Carhenge.

You couldn't fit in the Needles Hwy?? Big mistake, I ran it about 0800 and had the road to myself, well me a couple of deer :eek:mg:

This was one of, no, it was the best rally I've ever ridden in. It took me to so many of my favorite places and areas it was fabulous. At the same time it hurt so bad because there were so many reminders of Eddie all along the route. It's hard to rally with a lump in your throat and tears in your eyes.

The rest of the photos are here.

Hey Rick, there is a shadow of an alien in your carhenge photo, it has a wire coming out of it's head!

Eddie and I knew each other but not nearly as well as many of the other 'strangers' such as yourself. He did, however, give me a tip one time that came in quite useful Saturday night as I was struggling to stay awake. The Soltec's keep me awake at night, but there is just no way to use them if there are other cars around. Eddie once told me that he would sleep in the early evening, then ride though the night alone on the road. I wanted to get past Fargo before calling it a night, but I had that WWED sticker on my fuel cell. So i asked myself, I said, "Self, what would Eddie do?" I answered, "I think Eddie would stop now, get back up at 2am and turn the flamethrowers on for the rest of the night..." and that worked!

Thanks Eddie. :thumbsupsmiley:

Good stuff boys! Really enjoyed the pics Rick. I think you are the OM of the midwest when it comes to a good camera eye.

I'm thinking the way to get you guys to visit us out west is to make a Rally out of it.

Now yer talkin... throw a few pie and cheese stops in and I'm sold...

Ya know... the theme this year for the Bonzai was Wineries... Just think what we could do with that in Cali

karstenp,

That's quite the set-up you've got there!

Thanks... I had a lot of fun putting the bike together. I noticed during the rally that there was some spare space left on the dash shelf... I have some ideas on how to fill it!

It was good to meet several of you at the rally. Congrats to stryg8r for an amazing ride and 1st place and to all others who placed and finished well.

Rickcorwn...some great pictures that you posted. There is one picture taken at the checkpoint that show several riders finishing late and waiting to be checked in. The last guy in line with the 07 FJR and yellow Stich is me... Good thing you had no audio as I was not too happy with myself at that point  It is impossible to recover those lost points!!!

Next rally for me will be the IB5000. It will be great to see several of you again.

Very cool. I turn 28 this week and I know even I would be beat doing 1k in a day, although I would like to do it. I've done numerous 500mile days with my wife on the back so 1k solo should be ok.

I'm sure I'll see some of you guys around, I'm on my FJR a lot. Lets do a ride this summer.

Paging Gramps... I think this is your territory. Lets keep it out of August though... A few of us are going to be running around the country again then.

Peter, That was me that recognized your bike as we were leaving Leo's (I remembered the smiley face), I never saw your bike again so didn't get a chance to introduce myself. I along with Behmer and Stryg8r will be seeing you in Denver and hopefully Spartansburg apparently. Cruzin will be finishing the SPANK in Denver too before we roll out and Rick may be in attendance with his camera if I remember correctly.

We will definitely have to take some time in Denver to talk..... Great ride report.

Hey DaJuice:

What is the deal with that gas receipt in Java, SD? I've heard about the receipt and old pumps. Looked like you were pulling the receipt out of the trash bin. How do you get that sucker to spit up a receipt??

Enquiring minds need to know.

Useful information to know for the IB5000!

Java was also a bonus on the 2008 ButtLite. Page 18 or so you'll find my experience with it. Just by luck I got a receipt.

ButtLite IIIII report

There was an equally challenging fuel receipt at a Motorcycle dealer in Minnesota. The pumps were so old they didn't go up to today's price. So you had to double the price shown on the pumps. Then you had to remember to double the gallons for the fuel log receipt. Devious.

Then there was the Casa Bonita restaurant bonus in Denver. I'm hoping some similar Eddie bonuses get into the IB5K.

That is just plain crazy!

Good to Know. Thanks.

Lucky for me I didn't go to Java, at least that I can remember. Rick did and he had some photo's of it so he's the man to ask about that although looks like Stryg8r gave a nice tutorial on that now. Good thing I didn't go there, I had heard about a few spots that require a second swipe of the card but didn't know where any of them were. Like I would have remembered that trick at O-dark-thirty.

Me too... cursing rally masters is half the fun! A quote from Minnesota Motorcycle Monthly the issue after BLIIIII, "Sorry, wrong giant bat." [see page 49 of Dereks report for the incite on that one]. I can see the light bulb in Eddies head going on when he ran into that beauty then giggling in his helmet for the next few hours over what everyone would inevitably do.

I went there on the MN2010 but it wasn't a bonus location I used it as a part of my fuel log.

Java was a bonus on the Butt Lite IIIII, I didn’t run that rally but I did some bonus scouting in the Dakotas and helped out at the start. I remember Eddie telling me and the other staff the story of how he and Pedrow found that bonus. They were driving across South Dakota in a blizzard at 2:00 in the morning in the Ranger headed for Java to see what they could find there for a bonus. They found this odd gas station. Because Java is so small the station is unmanned but didn’t have the normal pay the pump gas pumps. There was a white box “that looked like a paper towel dispenser” according to Eddie, where you would swipe your credit card. But the real trick was to get a receipt you needed to swipe your card a second time and it would spit out your documentation. All this was of course told with much arm waving, embellishment and nearly spilled Dr. Pepper. The bonus when you saw it on the route sheet was so simple, so easy, so deceptive it was pure Eddie. Just get a gas receipt from Java South Dakota and score some easy points, nothing to it.

More Java SD:

Many, many years ago I was moving my family (W. to E.) across the country in a 1931 Model 'A' Ford AA (LWB, Hi-speed R.E.) when, in Wyoming, I turned onto WY 28 at Farson (just S. of S.Pass City). There was a wide pull-off at the intersection where sat a Model A pick-up towing a Murray Body '31 Model A Sedan. Of course I had to stop and we talked Model As for quite a while. He said he picked up the very nice, and rare, Murray Body sedan at Erwin Erbe's farm on US 12 in Java SD. Of course, my route then changed to include Erwin Erbe's farm. Eventually, we arrived -- you couldn't miss it -- along the highway for a long stretch were old vehicles parked along the fence-row. We drove in the drive-way and met Erwin Erbe -- he showed us around (the real 'treaures' were in buildings on the farm). He said he got most of the vehicles from the air -- he had an old Piper Cub-style airplane and for years the State (or some Govt. Body) offered a bounty on coyotes. He said he hunted them from the plane (by himself) with a shotgun. He'd spot one and fly low over it and shoot it -- then, go back and get it later. Well, he said he spotted lots of "jewels" doing this from the air. He'd then approach the farmer and offer to take that old car/truck/etc. off his hands. He said he quit when the shot gun accidentally discharged and shot a good-sized hole though the plane's wing. All of this was fun and interesting until Erbe just started to take way too much interest in my wife and we decided to bid farewell.

But, I never forgot Java SD.
