Happens to me quite often too.

Favorite one was a rather pretty young lady at a gas station that commented "Nice Beemer".

I replied with "Thank you, but it's actually a Yamaha. Wanna go for a ride?"

Without another word, she climbed into her BMW 520 and promptly drove off.

Regrets, I've had a few... :(

PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!

People don't talk to me.....so, I have no idea. Good luck in yer quest to find out what other people think.

It could have something to do with the fact that the Japanese engineers who designed the FJR spent a lot of time in Germany with the express purpose of building an UberBMW. I don't think the resemblance to a BMW is mere happenstance. The Japs really caught the Germans by surprise so much so that BMW had to completely redesign the K bikes to stay competitive. The closest thing to a FJR in 2002 was a BMW.

yep. They probably benchmarked the K1200 from late 9o's

My favorite case of mistaken identity was from the rider of one of the older BMWs. He rode past several cars at a red light to ask me if my FJR was the new BMW. He was real excited till I told him it was a Yamaha. His face kinda sunk, but then he smiled and said it looked good. Watching his expression was priceless.

Almost every gas stop. And even once from a BMW rider (on a GS).

The 2 biggest questions I get are "is that a Beemer" and questions about the Aerostich suit.

Hey, if its about bikes, I'll jaw with anyone :)

Griff

Every day, I have no problems with some one thinking it is a Beemer I think it is quite the compliment.

Just curious because this has happened to me on at least 3 occasions, all by HD riders.
I don't talk to Harley riders.

Kidding! :yahoo:

I've had several people on all makes/models ask me about the FJR. I just tell them it's a Yamaha FJR1300 and ask them what they ride. No big deal.
HD riders know how to talk? Who knew!!! I've only heard them grunt. LOL!!!

Only once, but it was by the same dude who commented that my wingman's GL1800 was the "Gold Standard of cruisers"...

I live in cruiser country, so if it's not some brand of cruiser or sport bike, it's a BMW.

Guess my answer is constantly.

I've had a BMW rider make that error (he rides a GS).

The best explanation I've ever heard was on this board. Can't give credit because I don't remember his name, but he tells people "it's the ******* love child of a Gold Wing and a Hayabusa!"

I often use BMW as a point of reference to describe my FJR:

"What do you ride?"

An FJR

"HUH?"

An FJR1300

"Oh...Is it a Harley?"

HELL NO; It's sooo much better

(scowl)"Well, what IS it?"

Have you seen the BMW ST's?

"Ooooooh, why didn't you say so?"

sigh

Had it happen in Santa Barbara once, at the Marina. I had just parked my 04 next to an FJ, when this guy walks up and says "how do you like your BMW?" I quickly corrected him so as not to offend either bike ;)

All of the Sport tour bikes resemble each other to the untrained eye...like wedged shaped rear/mid engine supercars or crotch rockets. Or fly fishing rods for that matter.

Form follows function.

All women resemble each other to the untrained eye...like wedged shaped rear/mid engine supercars or crotch rockets. Or fly fishing rods for that matter. Stand them on their heads and they all look like sisters!

I fixed it for ya!

Funny you should ask. A friend of mine (also on a FJR) and I just got back from an 8 day trip to the Smokey Mountains. The second day a guy at a gas station looked out his car window and said "nice looking BMWs". We just nodded and said thanks. The very next day, another guy said "those are nice looking bikes, what are they?". I replied "Yamaha FJR". He responded "very nice, they look like BMW's". We grinned and explained why, and said thanks!

In fact, finding out what other people think is a large part of my occupation. By the way, Odot, why do you think that people don't talk to you? Or, are the voices you hear company enough? <_<
