Update: I took Zilla'a advice and emailed the Chief and got a prompt reply. He sent me this public release from the un-named officer.

The officer, who doesn't want to be identified by name, released the following statement to WSFA 12 News:

"I don't have any hard feelings against the department. All my life and throughout my career I have tried to be humble and reserved, but I'm not perfect. If I could start over I would have never done what I did. I appreciate everyone's support. I can't believe how everything has turned around for me. I guess it's the will of God."

This thing ain't over yet, which is a good thing.

Seems that the speed limit may very well be about what they were doing on that long wide road. All they seemed to do was accelerate quickly. I hope that's not breaking the "law".

All that said and great comments posted here, whenever someone has a camera (especially mounted to their helmet), BEWARE! You might be on Youtube, or loose your job, or not get a future job, or....

Cool, glad he gets to stay on the job! Unfortunately most departments have become so concerned with liability and public perception that firing officers is as easy for the chain of command as pouring a cup of coffee. I've got several years left and just hope I can keep my head down and my mouth shut until retirement.

Glad things worked out in the end for the guy. Glad I am not in the business any longer. It was fun for a while, but I don't do well at dealing with stupidity. Especially for 20 years!

During the high school years , I was 'found' at least once every 2 weeks by a Moto LAPD LEO as I was riding my Wixom-faired and bagged CB750 to the house. He would pull in behind me, and we would run the 'pace' for 3-4 miles on back road, non-residential streets.

I often wondered why never switched the lights and siren. In my senior year, very close to graduation, he lit me up. I pulled over, scared. The officer said he had really enjoyed our game of cat and mouse, appreciated I never put anyone at risk, slowed when prudent, then cornered 'like a banshee'.

I have never forgotten that officer.

Ahh, the good ol' days, and I'm glad this officer has his job back.

I have usually believed that most police officers are decent folks, that a very small percentage made the rest of them look bad. Then, a really nice cop comes along and gets punished for... being nice?

I am glad the man was re-instated. Hopefully he can turn all this exposure into positive publicity and get the job he really should have. He needs to replace Chief Murphy.

When Pop and I were almost home from our Trip Out West last year we passed through a small town about 8 miles from Dad's house. I was leading, the Homesickness was in me. We were speeding. This little RedneckVille town strangely uses BMW R1200RTs for police bikes. I look back and there is one right behind Pop. I just knew we were going to get a ticket. After travelling over 4000 miles, covering half the U.S. I am going to get both of us a ticket in my own backyard. I never slowed down. The cop fell into our staggered formation and followed our two Sport Tourers all the way through town. Just past the city limits sign, he gave us a big wave and turned around. They ain't all bad.

Total liberal media blowing a non event, out of proportion......What fairy tale race are you guys talking about? Saw this on tv with the wife and laughed. No one revving up at the launch, no speed of any real nature, mini-van issue. Officer took off briskly from intersection,..... Rolls out of it by what, 50-60 max? Big deal.....

Fire the officer for playing around? I don't think so. How fast were they going....50..60. Ooooh my.Would you prefer that he pulled over the sport bike rider and wrote him up? Sets a bad example? Yes for some. On the other hand not for all. No harm, No foul. Positive PR? That cop made that guys decade and a big smile goes a long way. It's tough being human. It's even tougher being a LEO IMHO

I didn't see anything particularly unsafe, they slowed down well before traffic and their speeds "appear" not any higher than what I see CHP and city moto cops riding at regularly.
That being said, it was certainly ill advised of the cop to agree to a drag race, I am all for community policing and sharing a few good laughs with civilians, actually I strongly prefer that type of policing to adversarial shoving the ram-rod of law down your throat type of military policing. However, that attitude has to come from both sides, it was a douchebag move or just stupid/ignorant of the CBR rider to post up that video.

I liked what I saw. So what. Big Deal. Wish more officers had fun like that.

So while they were "racing" they got passed by a minivan?? Hooligans I say.
Holy Hell...I can't wait to retire.

I'm very glad the guy got his job back...but he still gets to face the supervisor that wanted him fired and still gets to face the BS discipline for being a "good guy" and putting a good face on the PD.
