One of the problems with buying custom-fitted earphones is that there is no way to know how they will perform until they're made. Nonetheless, on faith, I spent $300 on a set of Big Ear custom-fitted earphones. They fit well, and isolate sound well. I was underwhelmed with the quality of the drivers they used in the molds, though. Granted, I went with the middle of 3 audio quality choices they offer, and I maybe should have ponied up an additional 100 bucks, or so, for the really good drivers.

Instead, I decided to use a coupon Costco sent me for the V-Moda Vibe HQ headphones. Costco normally sell them for $60, compared to $90 at Circuit City. With the coupon, Costco let me have them for $50.

Welp, wow. The sound quality is leaps and bounds superior to the Big Ear drivers. Too, the wind noise isolation of the Vibes is comparable at ++cruising speeds to the Big Ear headphones. All in all, were I armed with foresight, I'd have skipped the Big Ears and gone straight for the V-Moda Vibes.

I have been to Bike rallys and shows where there are vendors making custom ear plugs on site. Has anyone seen them making custom earbuds as well? I am off to Laconia this coming weekend and would look around for one of these vendors if they actually existed.

About half of the time one or both ear buds come out when I put on my helmet.
How do you get your helmet on without tearing these types of ear buds out?
I keep my index finger on them while pulling the helmet down. Odd to do at first and then pretty natural.

I met a guy up on top of Mount Hamilton that used the regular iPod headphones. He duc taped them to his ears, said it worked well

I use the BOSE Ear buds. A little expensive at $99.00 but it the BEST sound you'll ever hear.

so, in other words, they're absolutely nothing like their home audio speakers?

I noticed while watching Nascar that the drivers have what looks like custom earplug speakers but they also put a piece of tape over them once in their ear before they put the helmet on.

I just got my set of earfuze earbuds (I went for the $40 kit), and I've just played them using music from my computer. Damn, I likey! Ok, it's not the Philharmonic but works for classic rock.

I' the mold thing and go for a ride in the next couple of days if my daughter will let me borrow her Ipod and will put something on it that doesn't sound like thugs bashing each other with garbage cans.
