How about something like:

"all that mattered in that moment was that road and that bike and the underlying knowledge that at any moment the tenuous grasp of balance and grace could be upset by any number of circumstances so that I was always attentive to the situation at hand, although it felt as though danger and me were miles apart."

Very "politically correct".
