My sister and brother in law are packing up the three little ones and heading to cali from michigan victims of the auto industry collapse. they are looking around the murrieta area to live. he will be working in vista.

Anyone familiar with the area I would appreciate any and all inside info you could give. good areas bad areas etc.

On the plus side it will give me another reason to head to the west. :yahoo:

Canyonman,

I live in Temecula, which is adjacent to Murrieta, California. This area is part of Riverside county and has a population of about 100,000, as does Temecula. Years ago, this area was experiencing tremendous growth as the properties were far less than the surrounding metropolitan areas like San Diego and Orange County, etc. Families could buy a comfortable single family home for a decent price and commute. Temecula has a growing industrial infrastructuree. As a result, the demographics are younger families, and mostly middle income. Both Temecula and Murrieta are well planned and relatively modern in their layouts. Many of the tract homes have trails, parks, swimming pools, etc. Modern shopping centers, malls, etc.

Temecula is known for its wineries. Do an Internet search and you can pull up lots of information about them ,as well as the restaurants, hotels, etc. Both Temecula and Murrieta have historic "Old Town" districts with lots of antique shops, restaurants, etc. Adjacent and west of the main populated areas of these two towns there are hills with very nice homes and large properties. La Cresta and Tenaja Hills is adjacent to Murrieta and is mainly horse properties - I think 2 acre minumums. Adjacent to Temecula is De Luz, which is mainly avocado and citrus groves with 5-acre minimums. (This is where I live.)

This area is about 45 minutes to Vista, a bit more for Murrieta. The good news for someone moving in is that property values have plummeted here! It's a great time to buy if they can qualify. (Shameless plug here: I'm working on my real estate licenses as we speak and would love to help them out.)

I hope this helps a bit. All in all, a nice area as long as they don't want to be close to the beach.

Best,

Rick

I live in Vista, where you said that he will be working. I would say that Vista is somewhere between 30 to 45 mins down the freeway from Murrieta. Traffic can get downright ugly going through Escondido in the mornings. When he starts commuting to work, he may want to exit the freeway two or three exits before the 78, and go into Vista on the backroads.

FYI, there is a Border Patrol checkpoint on the 15 between the Temecula/Murrieta area and San Diego area. This is sort of the unofficial seperation marker between Riverside and San Diego counties, and the only "main" connection between the two. Not that important, but sometimes they like to run the checkpoint during busy hours, which could really bring the freeway to a crawl. Personally, if I were working in San Diego county, I would try to find a place to live in San Diego county just for that reason. Then again, there are alot of folks who live in Temecula and commute to San Diego, so....to each his own.

Let us know if there is anything else you would like to know about the area...?

One more note about the Murrieta / Temecula area. If your sister & brother-in-law ride, this area is MECCA! We're sort of at the intersection of many great roads. (Check it out on Mapquest or the like...) Nice roads heading east like Highways 76 or 79, and then drop down to the local desert, head south to San Diego county and all its great roads, head west over the Ortega mountains to the coast, or head north to the San Bernardino mountains. Great riding in every direction!

unfortunately for them they don't. but I plan on visiting as often as I can and exploring all that I can.

Thanks again it really helps they are kinda freaked out. a move clear across country away from friends and family was not in their 20 year plan.

In the unlikely event your sister & brother-in-law get popped for selling meth, drop me a line and I'll work some connections for ya..

Murrietta/Temecula is a nice suburb area. It is a very new area and does not have a bad section that I know of. It is hot though and the border patrol check point is a PIA. I live in Fallbrook which is half way between Murrietta and Vista but still in SD county. They might want to get an apartment for a few months so they can check out different areas to see what works or them. I would be willing to bet they could find something closer to Vista than Murrietta to cut down on the commute.

Good luck to them!
