Last Wednesday the saddles went to Billy Mayer out by TWN. They're there in his shop right now in some state, be it the same way I left it, half desconstructed, half reconstructed, I've got not clue. But I have no saddle, so I have no ride.

So that's 6 days now I haven't moved my pretty blue machine more than a few feet around the garage and on/off the center stand. I've since put on Skyway Sliders (mmmm... purdy), Grip Puppies (harder to get on than you'd imagine. Thicker than you'd imagine!), and I've adjusted the suspension to the Sport Rider settings. I've wiped her clean. She looks nice. I've cycled the engine just to hear her purr like the kitten she is.

I have a TBS tool I'll use before I get my saddles back.

I have a electrical post kit I'll install before then.

Waiting on Top Gun Bar Ends. Will be installed within seconds of arrival.

Maybe I'll learn how to remove the rear wheel and grease the pumpkin. Who knows.

*sigh* The sweet taste of improving my fine ride mixed with the acrid flavor left from my inability to ride.

Yes, this is ramble.

Rocky and Company does indeed make a fine saddle. However, would you buy a high buck, hand tailored suit by mail? Mmmmm, didn't think so. I ain't breakin' yer balls or nuttin', but even the best ain't gonna get it right all the time from pictures and words. I'm jes sayin'.

I'm so passionate about ride-in fittings, that I've offered (it still stands) that anyone who has a pre '06 Feej can fly themselves to Santa Barbara, I will pick you up at the airport, house you, feed you and drive your butt to Rocky's for a fitting on my bike with your pan and risers. I feel that is how important the fitting is.

Word.

Keep us posted after you get in broken in...

Well, seeing there are zero custom seat builders I have found anywhere near Detroit, I didn't have much choice. I'd have put quite a few miles on the bike to get a custom jobby done, but now Detroit to SB. That's a wee too far for me.

Regardless, I'll let ya know how it goes. It's gotta be better than the stocker.

I'm on my second mail-order saddle from Russell. The first was a 98se Wing and it was good enough for BBG's, 1600+ mile days, SS2Ks, rallies, etc. The second is for the FJR and is good enough for multiple rallies, some 1k days, a 1200k day or three, and the 2003 IBR. Seems mail order works jess fine, thankyouverymuch.

So TWN, what is it you know about making seats again? ;)

Me? I know jack. That's why I mailed mine in to Russell. They know how to make a seat so it fits right, and all from a few pics and some questions. Truth is, they see more re-work on ride in seats than mail in seats. Mostly because the customer screws it up thinking they want something to feel good for around the block rides, rather than across the country ones.

Pick your poison and go with it. 98% of people won't be sorry they went with a custom seat, regardless of who they end up using and wether they mail it in or ride in to have it done. :yahoo:

OK, there's two that it's worked for. BFD. I've seen more 'I have to send mine back to get it tweaked' mail in comments than I've seen your comments. Not dissin', jes observin'. That's why I said,

Which is why I also said,

Um,

I spent 2 years wandering endurance rallies and RTEs (asking quesitons and talking to owners - circa 1997). It was based on those discussions with people who put just a few miles on their bikes that lead me to originally choose Russell. To a person, they were pleased and very few (if any) did ride ins. Of all of those I can probably count those who had to send their mail in's back on 1 hand. That ratio hasn't changed over the years.

So my observations trump yours. :bleh:

Awfull nice of you. What's for dinner?

Well, you have a fat ***, too, so you wouldn't know the difference anyway! :****:

Though I didn't troll ( ;) ) the rallies, I did ask damn near every rider on ST/T machines about their saddles, most who did ride-ins were completely happy, most who did mail-ins weren't. That's just my experience, which in the grand scheme of things, means little to anyone but me. So, there! :bleh:

I have a question. I have tried sargeant seats, corbin seats, sheepskin with gel inserts, sheepskin without the insert, wood beads, air hawk etc. I think you get the message. Either my butt lights up sore as can be or my knees kill me. Are you'll saying the russell eliminates all that. Any assistance would be much welcomed cause the older I get the shorter time I am able to spend on the bike before the aforementioned knees and butt act up. Thanks Everett

Well, from being a pedal biker also, saddle soreness can/will go away if you spend time in the saddle. My non-expert advice would be to find something that doesn't cause knee pain for you and ride the hell out of the saddle. Your rear will get used to it.

Corbin's theory is identical to saddle theory for pedal bikes. Softer is NOT better in those two books. Harder is better because you're not moving fat/muscle around and constricting blood flow. Regardless, your rear needs to get used to whatever you ride on.

I'd have bought a Corbin if it wasn't for the disgusting price tag. $900+ is rediculous for a saddle that isn't custom in my book.

i did the same thing over the years. i spent more on half-assed solutions than if i'd just gotten the russell from the start. so much for saving money.

went with the russell and that was the deal. if you need your knees, then tell them. if you have hot spots, tell them. i asked them to raise mine at least an inch to 2 inches to releave the knee pain. they did and bingo! all better. i tip toe now, but to hell with what the bike feels like when it's stopped. i'm interested in how it works with the tires spinning.

I'm about to pull the trigger on something, either a Mayer or a Russell. Can some of you guys post some pics maybe to get a better idea of what they look like on the bike?

Is there anyone who has a ride-in service to get a custom seat on the East Coast or Mid-West? Everything I'm finding is on the West Coast.
