My used FJR came with new ME880's Do I keep um or not

Well guys, I told you I would not be long before some questions.

The title says it all. I bought my 07 FJR with 3000 miles on it. the former owner has already replaced the front tire with the me880 and he gave me a new one for the rear ( Which needs it right now)

From what I have read here. no one has them on front and rear, though some of you have them on the rear.

I have been down on my Gixxer due to a low side. ( happened so fast I didn't even react)

So I am a little afraid to put these on, on the other hand I hate to waste new tires, and if I pay for a new set of tires, the deal I got on the bike is less of a deal. But my life is worth more.

I am thinking of puting on the rear and taking off the front for a D220 Cycle gear has on sale.

Whats your Thoughts?

If you're not comfortable, change them. Put the unused one up for sale on CL or ebay. Search here for 'tires' and you'll find a whack of threads and opinions. Be sure to read JeffAshe's threads on tires he's tested.

If it's tire reviews you want, then click here. Althought they have mixed reviews, I am convinced my Storms have saved my bacon more than once. They are sticky!

 
Doesn't seem like the 880s are the tire for you if you're low-siding your Gixxer. Of course if you try leaning the FJR like you do the Gixxer, you'll lever the tires way off the ground and it won't matter how sticky they are.

 
My $.02

Sell the new rear 880. Use the front tire to test your tire repair kit and buy some new skins to enjoy the hell out of your new ride.

If it was a cruiser I'd put the rear on, but I like the grip of ST specific tires.

Not everybody would do this, but you asked.

+1 Peace of mind & enjoying your ride is worth more than a set of tires....and way cheaper than a getoff.

I'd run the 880 rear and a sticky front of choice for any long distance trips you might be soon taking. Otherwise, run stickies front and rear...

Damn, he beat me to it. I also second his advice. The front 880 is the only tire I had to take off before it wore out. It cupped so badly I had to remove it before it was half way wore out.

 
My advice:

Buy a set of ST tires front and rear and ride that bike. But hold onto the new rear ME880 for sometime in the future when you are planning a cross country trip and don't want to have to stop in 4000 miles to replace the rear tire. Use it with a sport tour front tire of your choice.

My choice for ST tires is the Pirelli Diablo Strada. I run 'em front and back, but the backs won't last all that long compared to the ME880, especially on the slab.

 
Don't start out your time with a new bike equipped to deliver 80% of it's performance envelope. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the ME880 rear, but it cannot deliver 100% of the FJR's performance envelope. Saving it for the slab sounds like a good idea to me. Give the front 880 away to someone with a cruiser who can actually benefit from it.

Spoon-on a good set of sticky ST tires front and rear. Get to know the machine with a setup that has more room for error.

 
I did the ME880 thing on the rear in preparation for a long trip. I was unhappy from the moment I rolled out of the driveway. The tire made the bike feel nervous to me the whole time I used it. I was happy to take it off before it was worn out. I also ride an R1 so I enjoy a good handling bike but the ME880 FJR combo did not work for me.

Good luck with your choice.

I put an ME880 on the rear to go with my 1/3rd worn Strada on the front for the 8000 mile trip to WFO6. It handled and rode very well. I always made sure the tires were well warmed up before doing any canyon carving. These were hot, fast miles! After close to 13000 miles on the 880, its due to be replaced this spring. I'll likely get another one if nothing better comes out before then.

Wow. 13k on an FJR rear tire is at least double the wear that you'd get out of a stickier ST tire.

D220 may not be suitable for the FJR. May not have proper weight rating and will definitely wear too fast. YRMV.

What size are the 880 everyone is putting on. I did not think they made the right size.

 
I have been riding bikes for only 8 years but have rode on many different tires, even Avon ...the best to date so far for me is the Michelin Pilot Road 2... sticky on the lean and more miles on the middle, and the best in the wet yet...Avon are a close second....don't cut corners on the tires Bro...

I've scraped a peg a few times with them and they do fine. I don't get a knee down but do ride "brisk" mostly in the mtns.

I wouldn't choose them for trackdays but I wouldn't choose the FJR for trackdays either. They're designed for heavy cruisers & touring bikes like the 1200LT.

In my experience they're not good in the wet. For sure I wouldn't run an 880 on the front, but rather something stickier. My $0.02 worth.
