Mystery Bolt 12mm #7 ????

So I installed heated grips at my brother in law's shop last night, and as we were finishing up, this bolt magically appeared under the bike.

Photo quality sucks, but you get the idea....

He keeps a tidy shop and the floor was clean under the bike--

I rode it home, everything seems fine. The bolt looks brand new like it's never been torqued on to anything before.

I'm a little nervous as it is metric--a 12mm fits perfectly on it. It has a "7" on the head and is about 5/8" long--

Not entirely convinced it came off the bike...we never used anything near that size on the project...

Thoughts?

 
Ah, you've got the other end of someone's Limbo Zone portal! Stuff comes outa nowhere for you, and somebody somewhere is pulling his hair out trying to find that.

Actually, I don't recall seeing any brass- or gold- colored bolts on the bike anywhere. It looks like it might be one of the two bolts that holds the piece that the rear of the tank bolts to. No, those are 10mm. . . . . Dunno!

 
Oh crap!!!

That's the bolt that holds the two halves of the crankshaft together!

Do NOT rev it over 2300rpm until you get that thing put back in there!!!

Interesting, but this is sort of the inverse mystery of where all those things go that drop down inside the fairing and are never seen again. Hmmmm...

Its the oil drain plug.
So how far should i run it without that? :lol:

Despite the picture, the thing is actually silver. Also, my brother in law says he's seen "new" hardware drop out of cars he's working on many times--the theory is the elves drop something during assembly, they grab another bolt and move on...

It's been told -- that disgruntled/bored auto assembly-line workers have, purposely, put things that may cause rattles in hard-to-reach places in new cars -- along with a note that reads (something-like): "Well, you finally found it -- you rich S.O.B....!" :unsure: :)

 
That bolt looks for all the world like it is a crate assembly bolt. I get a hand full occasionally from

my local shop to use as seat bolts, etc on my old vintage dirt bikes, etc.

They typically break the crate down by spinning those out with an air ratchet, and they usually let them fall where they may. In this case, probably into the innards of your bike on set up. Took this long for it to "birth"

But just in case, look at that oil sight window one more time. :-}} Cliff

I think this is the best explanation so far. Took off some tupperware that hasn't been removed before, could well have been in there. Maybe I'll duct tape the little ******* onto the bottom of the seat just in case....then I'll always know where it went.

 
That's the bolt for the flux capacitor. Can't travel through time with it duct taped to the bottom of your seat. Although, that is a good place for it. The crate thing sounds right. Especially if you didn't take it off of anything.

 
That does look like one of the pesky crate bolts that tend to dive into the plastic when the bike is being taken out of the shipping crate.
