I recently moved to a VERY rural part of Colorado and my FJR won't be able to handle the terrain getting to / from my new place. :( Also, because I am so remote, selling the bike from there will be very difficult so I am intending to take it to a dealer in Denver, CO to better my chances for selling (knowing I'll get a lower sale price). I'm familiar with KBB, but wanted to get folks opinions on a more real world value when I put this on the market in the next month. Here are my details, thanks for all the help!

Bike Details:

- 2006 Yamaha FJR1300AE (Auto clutch model)

- I am the second owner (40+ yrs old), prior owner was older gentleman (60+) who was also very careful with the bike

- Mileage is 22310, mostly highway miles

- Always garaged / covered

- Bike was knocked over onto the right side in the garage, minor scuffs / scrapes on a couple of contact areas on that side (no breaks or cracks).

Accessories:

- Yamaha side AND top cases including the internal bags for the side cases

- Power Commander

- Piaa fog lamps

- Scorpio alarm system (currently deactivated)

- Safety pucks (frame attached)

- VStream windshield (electrically adjustable)

- End cap throttle locks

- Heated grips (standard)

- GPS / Phone mount with wiring to power

- New gel type battery within past 1.5 years, lightly used and always kept charged

- Replacement Pilot Road tires (front / rear) within past 2 years with good tread left

- Owners manual plus manuals to other accessories

Maintenance:

- Oil and filter replacement on schedule

- Flushed and filled the radiator within the past 1.5 years

- Proactive clutch soak within the past year

- Proactive lubrication of entire drive shaft within past 2 years

- Throttle body synch within past 2 years

- Recalls applied including the high altitude adjustment

- Throttle adjustment for easier twisting / releasing

- Spark plugs replaced within past 2.5 years

Because you're in the middle of winter, I'm thinking 6500 or so. You said, "end cap throttle locks." I assume that's a Throttlemeister? You said, "safety pucks." I assume you meant sliders? You didn't mention if you had the original windshield.

Hope that helps

Correct on the Throttlemeister and sliders. Don't have the original windshield :(

Unless you really need to sell quick, since it will be at a dealership it may be best to price it on the high side and then take an offer. I would start it between $7K and $7.5K. I am sure you have seen the 2009 AE on Denver Craigslist with 8K miles for $8600?

First off, ignore KBB. They are usually way off. NADA is a bit closer to reality, or ask to see a dealer's book. NADA says an '06 AE is worth ~ $7500 Average Retail. That would be what a dealer might expect. Low retail is only $5500. You might get that in a private sale. That also means that trade in is going to be about $4000 (or less).

Second, if you take it to a regular new bike dealership you are going to get raped. They won't even give you trade-in value because there is no new bike sale associated to make it worthwhile. A better option may be to find a motorcycle consignment shop where you get to help set the minimum price to accept and know up front what their cut will be. We have a few of those around up here. There must be some in Denver.

When establishing value, the added farkles do not add to the retail value. You may get something extra in a private party sale if the buyer wants some of the same gee-gaw you've already bought, but usually not. If you want to recoup that money you'll want to remove the stuff and sell it off separately.

AEs don't move particularly well, but if someone is looking for one it's pretty much the only show in town. You may do better just setting an aggressive price (at around trade-in) on here and see if any of those AE lovers want to do a fly and ride.

I'm with Garyahouse, $6500 came to mind right away. Since you're in God's country for dual sport/off road riding, might consider putting in an ad in Craigslist or a local fish wrap to see if someone would trade for something like this. Depending on condition/farkles, something like a DRZ is worth around half of that so you could end up with some cash to put in your pocket and a fun machine.

So you can do some of this.

"FJR won't be able to handle the terrain".Pffft....

It might not be the best bike for the terrain, but it will surprise you just what it can handle.
Says a man from Florida to a man in Colorado.

The Denver dealer may be less money but from what you said about where you are located that may be the best way to go to sell the bike. Price it at the upper regions of the value, you can always come down and the buyer will feel he got good deal.

Can you sell the fog lamps off the bike? Farkles always bring in more money off the bike.

I'll look at pulling some of the farkles, good idea thanks.

And you're right about the terrain - I really hoped I could make the bike work. With the rough cut, unmaintained easements, washouts, and hills / valleys I almost dumped the bike twice just trying to get it back to my property - and that was without bags. Great bike, but I'd have to change a lot in clearance / tires / road grading to try to make it work.... :(

Thanks to all for the feedback. very helpful, much appreciated!

I bought my 06 from a private seller who needed to get rid of it, $4500, no farkles, not much of a vehicle history. Similar shape as you described. I agree, AE's probably dont move as fast as the standard, sell the farkles separately, trade in on a dual sport?

I do love mine (AE) and still in the honeymoon phase

I obviously saw higher prices than $4.5 when i was shopping. $6-8K was typical.

I agree with Fred. Damn, did I just say that!?

Anyway, bad time of year, in a winter-unfriendly selling location, for a version of the bike (AE) most deem undesirable (I liked mine) all adds up to lower selling price. If you want to trade at dealer for a different bike - maybe an adventure type - you will get more than just selling to dealer. You best option it's too seek to a private party in an area that can still ride in the winter...in that case, you may get $6k or so IF you find a buyer who wants the AE.

Good luck!

I've been looking since last fall and bought 2 weeks ago.

My initial thoughts are something in the mid 6k range and recoupe some funds by selling the commander, alarm, and lamps.

How fast do you need to sell? Before you defarkle perhaps get the dealer offer and post your expectation. It would be difficult to sell over $6k as there is more than a dozen AEs avail nationwide. After a couple weeks on forums, craigslist, eBay, cycle trader , probably wise to de farkle and sell for 4-5k.
