I need a favor. I would like to look at your GenII. I don't even need to touch it, just look at the gap between the upper bracket and the steering head.

Since repacking the bearings, I have about a 3/16" gap that I don't remember from before the work. Bike handles and steers fine. I just don't feel comfortable with this gap I don't remember. I'd look at a GenI but I don't know if the front end is the same. Naturally, none of the local dealerships have one.

If you don't mind me peering at your gap, please let me know. I can even just look at it while you have parked it somewhere.

Thanks,

Dan

My son and I have an 06 and an 07 for you to look at. We are down in Rhode Island, which may be a little far for you to come.

Could maybe a couple pictures do instead? Post one so we know exactly where you're talking about, then we'll post ours.

That was my first choice. Unfortunately, my digital camera is currently non-operational (broke).

Ok, here's mine. I have a Heli triple tree, don't know if it matters. That's a 9/64" bit.

Thank you for taking the time to do that. From appearances, that seems to be about the same (I guessed at 3/16" before. It's actually about 7/64".) The thing that threw me is that I can see the steering stem nut and lock washer under there and I don't remember noticing that before. I feel better now and don't think I'll take it apart again. You can bet that I'll be peering at that area of every FJR I see for the next six months. Don't forget our motto here at OCD camp: "If a little of something is good, too much will be a lot better."

Thanks again,

Dan

No problem, from one OCD guy to another, now that I think about it I was worried about the same thing when I first put the Heli bar on. That was 10,000 miles ago, so I think I'm ok.

Working in portsmouth tommorrow and I will have my 08 I will be home at 4:30 in Barrington and most nights and weekends if you want to look

George, I returned your PM. I could run down to Portsmouth early afternoon. Could you post up where I might find your bike? Dan

A happy conclusion... Managed to run across two 2010 FJRs today. Both upper bracket gaps looked exactly like mine. So, I'm happy that things are OK. Thanks everyone for the help. George, maybe we could ride sometime. Dan
