at least you figured out it was hardware.
with software, what i've found that works very consistently is:
turn off system restore (so it deletes all the old restore points). do an update on AVG and then do another complete scan. do a Windows update (new patches out today for exploits) and do all the updates... repeat until no new updates left, repeat for MS Office if you're running that (Office Updates). Also do a search at McAfee, Norton, etc. for a tool to hunt-and-destroy CONFICKER. another option it to manually set your page swap file size very small (like 0k) so that the OS rebuilds it, set it to zero, reboot, ***** about the slowness, then once it's completely up again, set it to auto-os-sizing and do another reboot (moving the swap file to another drive works too if you have multiple dives).
Then run Easy Cleaner and do a default registry cleanup.
Then do a Disk Cleanup (turn ALL the check marks on)
Then do a defrag.
Then turn system restore back on. If you have a bug it could be embedded in your restore points and be returning after a clean.
My other recommendation is not to run multiple malware/spyware software in memory resident mode. Do manual scans but don't "install" them. Also consider unloading all your anti-virus stuff and then, instead of AVG switch to to NOD32. It's TONS faster and more accurate since about 2 revisions of AVG ago (or more). I used AVG for nearly 10 years but recently they started chasing after the feature list check mark and bloated up way too much. NOD32 has found stuff AVG missed and there's no hit on system performance like AVG's created since about v7.
