Sounds like too much effort to avoid the clunk sound. Could be clunkphobia....consult your local psychiatrist for that. Now, for the ticking.....

I've noticed on my 05 that the clunk between 1st and 2nd isn't as loud as say....second to third. Is there a clutch adjustment to get the plates farther apart from each other?

All I do is squeeze and release the clutch lever about five times (limbers the old fingers up at the same time) and pop it into first then... zoom zoom zoom....

I'm tellin' you guys.....just flick the kill switch off then back on as you are disengaging the clutch, push down on the shift lever as you touch the starter button and it will snick into gear instantly, quietly and you ride immediately away. Starting it in gear with the clutch disengaged eliminates all the problems with no monkey motion.
Or you could just start it in first with the clutch in, then shift to neutral, so the clutch plates are already apart, and you don't have to use the starter 2x every morning.

Bingo !!

I always park it in gear. Start it with the clutch in and then shift into neutral.
