I have been surfing this board and posting, but I have not said much about my new bike, I took delivery four weeks ago.

They took it out of the crate, assembled it, put fluids in it including gas, and turned it over to me. The odometer read all zeros when they gave it to me. I thought, oh, that's neat! I have never purchased a vehicle before with zero miles. We went over all the controls (I am not new to bikes and I test rode one a few days earlier) and the complete turn over list. Everything was fine.

I took off for home. When I got to the first traffic light, wow, almost no brakes. It really took me by surprise how weak they felt. Then I realized what it means to have zero miles and what I had always heard about breaking in the brakes. In all the new bikes I have purchased before and the demo rides I have done before I have never experienced this lack of brakes before.

Of course there is nothing wrong with the brakes, they are normal now. But then I thought, hey, they didn't even test drive the bike before turning it over to me. I'd better remember that after they do the 600 mi service.

I love the bike, unfortunately, I got a severe lower back pain three days after I picked it up so it sits in the garage with 240 miles on it.

Love that raven black.

No way they should have turned that bike over to you without testing it out themselves first. Do not take it back to them for the first service! If they gave a shit about you, they would have made sure the bike was in full operational order before selling it to you. Find a dealer you can trust.

At a BMW dealer nearby I was allowed to sit on a K1200GT that had just been set up and was supposedly ready for delivery. With the owner supervising to be sure I didn't scratch up their nice tank, or otherwise buggar up this bike, I grabbed the front brake... and there was nothing there.

They had not bothered to bleed the brakes to the extent that would be necessary to obtain a "pedal" from the front. I told the owner "this bike's got no front brake," he turned 8 shades of pale and told me "don't apply the front brake."

Ha ha ha ha ha ....

When I took delivery of my own BMW K1200Rsport at a different dealer back last November, they had assembled it from the crate, but when it was handed over to me, it had 11 miles on it. Everything worked perfectly, and they'd completed all recalls as part of the delivery.

There's a heck of a lot of variability from dealer to dealer... and that's true for every marque.

I'm glad you were able to get your brake issue resolved without a messy "incident."

Sorry, oh yeah, welcome to the forum and congrats on your purchase. I just hate that you bought the bike from a cocksucking lousy dealership. Check EVERYTHING before riding it again.

Congrats on the new bike, and sorry to hear abt ur back problems. I guess it would depend upon the policies of the dealership, but many guys have confirmed with the dealership that once the bike was uncrated, all the torque specifications were checked and the bolt heads "marked" to confirm that they were checked (but how do you ever REALLY know??...). Once you get yourself a service manual, you can do many things yourself, including checking torque on any fastener you want to check.

If you look in the newbie section of the forum, you will find a wealth of very useful information that will help you immensely. Maybe some good reading as your back heals. Ride safe Ron.

Glad to hear you got the brakes sorted out before anyone got hurt. What about the back pain, was it caused by the bike or something else? It's a shame to let a new bike sit in the garage. If'n you need someone to take it out and exercise it, lemme know. ;)

I don't know what caused the back pain, I can't point to anything. I have an office job, one morning it began to bother me a little bit, stretching and flexing didn't help. Over the next 24 hours the pain kept gradually increasing until I ended up at the emergency room. That was four weeks ago. My only times out of the house since then are for the ER and other doctor's visit. The day before I ran three miles (as usual) and I rode my FJR.

I have visited the newbie section extensively, and the rest of this forum too. I have spent a lot of my down time surfing the web, visiting here, and I have even ordered some farkles, imagine that!

This forum has been great for me.

Dude! didnt you know a 500 mile ride on an FJR will cure any back problems?

I do not knwo what constitutes a dealer check ride, but my 08 had 1 mile on it

I bought my '07 new in april with 0 miles (4,800 now). steering head nut was finger tight, left mirror loose and alot of fairing fasteners loose. I made the dealer mechanic take the first ride. Aggravating.

I bought mine in early May with zero miles. had the same issue with weak brakes.. Also less than a mile away from the shop I ran out of gas (coasted into a gas station). the engine died on me several times on my 45 mile ride home. Thanks to this forum I turned the idle screw up and fixed the dieing problem. Love the bike but still have not recieved my memorandum title so I can get plates..

You might want to go to a proctologist to fix your back pain. You might have sucked up a part of your seat when the brakes didn't work.

I've bought bikes in OH, and its never taken more than a couple of weeks to get the title, so you might want to bug the folks who were supposed to be doing the paperwork for you. Its probably assigned to the same person who is supposed to tighten the steering head nut, fill the tank with gas, and check the operation of the bike.

I bought my 05 DL1000 in Ohio with 0 miles on it, and everything was just about perfect, except it did need a throttle body synch.

I too have bought many bikes, infact this is my third one from this dealer... I have been in contact with them and they tell me it will be in the mail in a few days... I have also went to the title office and the title has never been switched into my name... I am thinking this dealer is a short timer!

Buy the book "Healing a Bad Back" by John M Sarno MD-at $13 it is the best back investment you can make. It is about the mind body connection and I went from spending thousands a year on physical therapist and drugs to a healthy back. It is a quick read and if you applly the information it can cure you.
