That bridge that shut off a long stretch of the coast when it collapsed this winter is getting close to reopening. They've spanned the gap with the girders and now just have to finish the road surface--They say it should open by the end of September.

The new bridge looks like it will be a pretty basic-looking structure, not nearly as iconic as the one it's replacing. Too bad, but getting the road open is the big deal. Here's the bridge the landslide took out:

And here's a link to a story about it. So make plans to come back to Cali and ride the coast!

Thanks, SacMike. I love bridges, and their construction.

Found this additional video, which shows the unconventional way they built this bridge. (Hey, I think it's unconventional.) This technique allows construction without putting a crane into the canyon, which was probably an environmental requirement.

The bridge pictured in Sac Mike's post is the Bixby Creek bridge, and it is iconic.

The Pfeiffer canyon bridge was not considered iconic before, as far as I know, and it doesn't look like it will be now either.

Still, it is good news if Big Sur opens soon, I have a yearly pilgrimage to make.

A guy from the west coast posted on the IB/LD facebook page asking why he couldn't get google maps to route thru that area.

I live in GA and know about this...
