I would say that it depends on which part of the Maine coast will be explored this year. That late in June (last weekend) may be pretty darn busy on weekends in the southern sections. Kids are already out of school, etc. Northern sections won't matter as much as they never get quite as congested. Or if this was on weekdays it wouldn't matter as much.

Just some more food for thought (Mmmm... lobster and clams)

I like Ionbeams idea/thought...Spead it out!!! A few rides per month?? forr recon/intel /taste testing. then with that info we can do a poll for a big blast last!!!! More Rides, more food, more friends, more fun!!!! :yahoo:

I'm thinking early (or mid) May would avoid any Memorial Day traffic that occurs at the end of May. My 2 cents.

*SFO-May 13-16 (Don't know if anyone is planing this one, being so far.)

*CFO-June 10-13

*Cats & Dacks June 11-12 ? Iris have you and Jim come up with a date for this yet ?

*CFR-June 21-24

*Regional FJR camping meet in the Appalachians ? 1st or 3rd week in June ?(still in planning)

So I'm gonna say the weekends of May 8-9 or 22-23 and if no one is doing SFO May 15-16 also. I guess I'm leaning toward May 15-16 or 22-23.

Just my .02

If any of the dining recommendations are seasonal, is there a chance they wouldn't be open until after Memorial Day?

Good catch MEM. I bet a lot of them will be closed before then. So if we do go before Memorial Day we will have to see who is open.

If possible I would prefer going before. That would beat the traffic and lodging may be cheaper.

I"m good with going before M Day. Surely we can find some good spots that will be open :)

Alisson's is open year round, not sure of any of the others....

Dates are open for suggestions, so will continue the discussion and keep an open mind for potential time frames.... certainly other times are options, just have to know that traffic may or may not be an issue. Many times I've gone to the White Mountains when the traffic should be heavy but was actually pretty reasonable. The holiday weekends are really the killers - Memorial Day, July 4, etc.

Part of my recon will consist of finding out which places are open year round vs seasonal and will post it. Perhaps we should decide on dates and routes first??

Putting this out there now.... will need a volunteer to collaborate with who can create and post .gpx files/routes, as my good computer with my Mapsucks is out of commision and can't use my current one because it aint mine

I agree that most of the good places are open year round, so I wouldn't worry about being before Memorial Day.

The locals have to eat too ya know. Ayup! And the places the locals go tend to be the best.

CJ - I can take care of the Mapsourcing once we know the venues to be visited and have a rough route worked out.

For route proposals and sharing you can use GoogleMaps, but instead of plotting locations on a map you have to use the "Directions" tab. Just put in a start and end location in the directions and then you can add as many destinations as you want. Just click on "Add Destination" and then type in what you are looking for. You can reorder the destinations by grabbing the green letter markers to the left of each destination in the list.

Once you have the route roughed in you can grab the route and drag it to the roads that you want to use. That will insert intermediate waypoint markers in the route that do not show up as destinations.

One other nice feature in GoogleMaps is in the destination list box is a link "show options" which will allow you to click on "avoid highways". I use this feature often when planning routes in areas I'm not familiar with as it will find the best available secondary roads even if it takes you a bit longer than the slab route.

After you have a route that you like, you can share it from the "Link" hyperlink in the upper right corner. Then just copy the top line of code and insert that into a message as a hyperlink like this: Test route

Other folks can then open your route and make changes etc and share them in the same way. The route never really gets "saved" it is just the instructions in the long link (hidden above) that contain all the waypoint info.

Try it out!!

[edit] I also have a utility that will generate .gpx files from this kind of a GoogleMap route for importing into Mapsource. Then it is best to do a lot of cleaning up of the route (in Mapsource) before trying to actually use it in a GPS.

Merry Christmas!!

Thanks for stepping up, Fred! Of course, we'll be in touch with everything here, but we can hash out the mapping as we get closer. Merry Christmas to all!

So, to refresh this topic, are there any new ideas/thoughts on dates from anyone else?

While several people have voiced their concerns over going either after Memorial Day or before Labor Day due to the spectator sport of the New England coast being in full swing, I was thinking, "Isn't that kinda what we'll be doin'?" Like, if we divided the Maine coast over three days of riding, seems to me like it should be doable while maybe opening up some more flexible times for more folks? Just putting it out there. I'm sure there are many peeps out there who would know better than I about the local info. Plus, remembering that some places may only be open seasonally (although I feel the BEST ones are open year round!).

For those folks possibly coming from a distance, I know that the last two year's month of May SUCKED weather-wise. At lest summer months means warmer temps, even if it is wet.

Looking for any opinions....... the forum is open!

My main concern with going mid-summer is that, especially in the sections in the southern tier (south of Portland) you'd need to be on and off Rte 1 to hit the scenic shore roads. The heavy summer tourist traffic would make the touring much less enjoyable. Yeah, you can get around in it, but since there is no lane splitting in Maine, you'll be caught in some stop and go traffic for sure.

As a bit of a Down East gastronomic teaser:

I've been working up in Bangor for the past 2 weeks (anyone miss me?). On the first day, one of the local guys took us over to a tiny restaurant on the Brewer side of the river for lunch. A tiny hole in the wall sort of shack, but it literally hangs off a cliff over the Penobscot. The point of this lunchtime excursion was that the Eagle's Nest Restaurant serves up possibly the best lobster roll on the planet!!

The plate comes out with a heaping mound of lobster meat piled on it. Savvy locals order theirs with two buns as there is plenty of meat to fill both and still have some left over. There was at least 10 full claws of meat plus some other knuckle pieces in the pile. The meat was sweet and tender and the dressing was not overly mayo'ed up. They serve it on a bed of home made fries and include a side of home made cole slaw. Fantastic! We ate lunch there 3 times a week. ;)

Definitely worth a stop when you are in the area. But Bangor is pretty far from the picturesque coast (~45 mins. west of Bah Hahbah) so the Eagle's Nest wouldn't fit very well into a coast-line ride.

Eagle's Nest Restaurant - Works for me. I can be there for supper, shoot the **** in the evening and be home the next day. Just a nice 1000 mile warm-up ride for the season.
