May 21-23 works for me.

I had been thinking of this ride going from the south on up with a long ride home, but your idea of starting at the top makes sense too. Peeps could slab it to Eastport (from wherever) on Thursday (5/20) for the start on Friday AM. That puts the end point of Kittery closest to the biggest number of day-ride folks going home. Of course it also means the Canadians will be furthest from home, and they do have the furthest travel just to get to the ride...

Here's the reverse analog: Start Saturday AM (5/22) in York and finish Monday (5/24) night in Eastport. Ride home the next day. There is one minor advantage to going Northeast vs Southwest: you won't be riding into the sun all day. ;)

Hmmm... tough decision. Glad I'm not leading this ride!! ;)

That's kinda what I was thinking. In either direction, I think, there will be folks who'll have to endure the long ride either to or from this event, so I think just taking that off of the table is reasonable at this point. Of course, it's best to accomodate the majority, which is what I'm attempting to do.

Won't ya be ridin' into da sun in either direction, just depending on the time of day there matey?

Thanks, Fred- knew I could count on you! :D

No sir. See, that whole pointing your bike to the Northeast keeps the sun over your right shoulder in the AM and behind you in the PM, at least in the northern hemisphere.

OTOH, if headed to the Southwest you'll be staring straight into the teeth of it in the afternoon. ;)

Very good then, sir, a southerly route it is! Everybody sing it with me now, "Sunshine on my shoulders, makes me happy..."

Well, deferring to age, umm, no I mean Fred's wisdom, coupled with impatience and a ****** work schedule, I hereby announce that the First Annual New England Clam Chowdah Ride will be the weekend of May 21-23. The meeting place will be the Kittery Trading Post, and leaving promptly at 9 a.m. The endpoint will be in Freeport for that day's ride. More details to follow, but I just wanted to get this thing cemented in for other people's planning purposes after reading NAFO 2010.....

It goes something like this........

Allll-righty then!

Here are some potential spots for your review. . . . you are certainly more than welcome to make/arrange your own accomodations. *** DISCLAIMER*** I have never stayed at any of the places listed and claim to have no first hand knowledge. Information based solely on internet research ONLY!! There are also plenty of chain hotels to choose from. There are also a bunch of B&B Inns in Freeport if you're of the mind, just typically more expensive but aalso more upscale if that's what you might be looking for.

I was just figuring that perhaps for some riders who are economically inclined (such as myself!), the Maine Idyll would afford a slightly cheaper option, and even cheaper if you are travelling together with someone and don't mind sharing a cottage. I certainly don't mind having a roomie, I just need a shower and clean/warm/dry place to sleep, nothing fancy. I'm suspecting I'll be having the wife in tow, but if you view the website, you'll see that there are rooms with two bedrooms. I see it as a way to cut costs without giving away comfort ;) . Any takers? I'm planning on staying here. Will do further research and set a restaraunt location/time as our departure point for day 2 in a subsequent post.

Just to be 100% clear, you want to start the trip on Friday May 21st at 9AM at the Kittery Trading Post, right?

I'm totally cool with it, just want to be sure you mean to start on Friday.

First day route looks really good.

And I say that Freeport makes good sense for the end of Day 1.

I'll get the route into file format for GPS use sometime before the trip, once we figure out a plan for day 2 and 3! ;)

Roger that, Fred. I know I had posted up that I'd give it til March 31st, but from reading through the NAFO 2010 late posts I figured I might as well just go ahead and post the dates so those planning on attending could make the arrangements. I was trying to be somewhat diplomatic about things and trying to accomodate as many folks as possible through their input, but I realize there is no one perfect time for all to make it, so . . . .

Yep, Kittery Trading Post leaving at 0900.

Thanks for the input on the routes, Fred. Don't hesitate to let me know if you have perhaps better suggestions (like riding Northeast!) when it comes to our route planning. And thank you for your help on it, I really gotta get a new CPU. Ya know, just for fun, I was looking online at the Panasonic Toughbook laptop computers last night. Do you have any idea how much they want for a damned computer??? Granted, I was most likely looking at the top of the line portable laptop, built to Mil-spec, but holy crap!!! :dribble: I'd have to sell my bike just to finance the damned thing!

I think I have the most of the other routes done, will pass them along to you sometime before mid-March. I'll also post them up here when they're done. Leaving tomorrow for Florida to go see my parents, so will be out of the net for a week.

For everyone seriously considering this ride, post up just so I can have an idea of potential numbers and locations of where people are coming from. Just to keep everyone up to speed, I'm currently researching lodging and restaraunts for Freeport, the endpoint of the first day's ride. So, if any of the locals or folks overly familiar with the area and have a personal best place to stay or eat, POST UP !!! :clapping: I've already plotted out all of the potential lighthouses that may cross our path via Lighthousefriends.com.

Some highlights of the first leg of the trip include, but are not limited to Nubble Light (Cape Neddick lighthouse) which is very picturesque; the wedding cake house in Kennebunk; Walker's Point - the summer home of President George H.W. Bush; Alisson's Restaraunt (self-proclaimed by me as the best New England Clam Chowder proprieter ever and the whole impetus for this god-foresaken ride :yahoo: ); and even a chance for the ladies to do a little shopping at the outlets, including LL Bean in Freeport!

Plan A = I'm in. No shopping for me, thanks! The rest of it sounds GREAT! :D

Can't say the I've read all of this thread but I'm thinking of a trip to Eastport, ME in this time frame and might try to join you if my timing works out.
