I'm getting some pressure (from the wife--where else?) to think of a destination to take our family--adult kids with partners, maybe a sister-in-law, for a week or a little more, rent a house, do some side trips, some shopping, some sightseeing. Maybe on the coast or a nice lake. I'm looking for ideas. Oh, yeah, maybe some autumn leaves, but I remember bumper to bumper traffic at the height of leaf season in the Berkshires one year, so that would be a buzz kill for me. Somebody in the northeast with good ideas, please chime in. We'd fly somewhere, rent a house and a car, and look for things to do. I'm dry. Help?

I think there's more for NH, VT and upstate NY. Post over in the other sandbox or send a PM to Hppants. (He hangs out more there so that would be your best bet for his take on it). He spent a significant proportion of last summer vacationing in NH.

This isn't the east coast but Traverse City MI is hard to beat in early fall. You've got the leaves turning, roads like the 'Tunnel of Trees'. Traverse City is pretty small but it still has quaint shopping the girls will love. Meanwhile, they boys are hitting the micro-brew pub. If you've not been to Sleeping Bear Dunes, well - you just got to challenge those youths to see if they can touch the water and get back - not for the faint of heart. We also spent a day on the river in Kayaks - that was really nice.

Lake George NY is a nice family destination. Has all the things you listed. And there are other things to do within a "short" distance. Like a 2 hour drive to Cooperstown, Baseball Hall of Fame.
