looks awesome.... which of the three is this?

I'm having a FrankenTank crafted by DT30. When he is done it goes to Garauld for paint...and Rhinoliner. The truck bed stuff, for the sides and front.

+1 Took if off my '06' and put it on '10'. 130,000 plus on my TechSpec.
+2 Don't have a good pic of the Snakeskin Tech Spec pads on my '09, but IMO money well spent verses the time and frustation of a home brew solution.

I used the High Fusion pre-cut for the FJR and also had some sheets of the uncut material that I also used on the tank at the seat front and lower on the side. I've put the Snakeskin on another bike and think they both look good. I don't get the logic of puting some stuff on the tank that might ruin the paint and not even last just to save a buck.

I paid it. Quality product. Worth it to me vs. the crappy job it would be if I tried to do it myself. And many others around here seem to agree.....
I know I agree. They fit like a glove and look very nice. I know I am very satisfied with mine.

Wow, you guys are a trip. lol! Talk yourself into reasoning that you paid money that was well spent. This price is absolutely redick in my book. I will put up some pics when I finally decide to do this. Chuck35, I like your idea... just too permanent for me, I think.

Well, it seems more around here seem to be the norm and you are more 'the trip'. And your book seems just a bit skewered. Think of it this way - you spend a lot of money on the FJR, its farkles, insurance, maintenance...... so what's $75 for a quality product. Hell, that is only 3 tanks of gas. I do that in a week.

Not to say that I don't admire those that can create a 'decent quality' product of their own making. Bu I'm not one of those people.

Yea, well, if I had talent..................

Sorry if I've insulted anyone's intelligence. That was definitely not my intention.

I guess I'll be the odd guy here, but I get where you're coming from. Sometimes when life's too damn busy, I'll just buy the premade stuff if I need it now. But if I've got the time, I like making or fixing it myself. There's a certain satisfaction that comes from building it yourself.

So if I was going to attempt this project, I'd probably go to a couple local hardware stores to see what's available. Home depot sometimes works, but we also have a small local chain that carries a larger selection of odd stuff. Or there's always online sources like Grainger:

https://www.grainger.com/Grainger/rubber-sheets-and-strips/rubber/raw-materials/ecatalog/N-c1z?Ndr=basedimid10071&sst=subset

where you can practice your search skills to narrow the huge selection down to what you're looking for.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Does anyone hang off the side of their bike far enough to warrant the need for tank grips?

I mean, come on, this is a FJR, not an R1.

If you're just going for looks and paint protection, fine, but stop talking about how well they work to help you "grip" the tank, unless you're really hanging out there on corners.

If you are - then I want to see pictures.

I don't think cornering is the issue. It keeps you in position on the saddle so you don't end up sliding into the gas tank and reduce fatigue on a long trip. At least that's my rationale.

I want it more for a secure feeling on the bike. I wear riding pants that tend to allow me to slide around. Sometimes a good thing & sometimes not so much.

Harald, thanks for the encouragement.

That's my take as well, but I don't have a tank pad. I have a whole freakin' tank cover I bought from Gramps. The price was right and I already had 3M paint protection on the tank, but needed some more grip.

Sorry Luv, I'm with Tom and Sam on this one also, which is why I went the expensive route many years ago. They still look good on the bike.

even though my knees have been jammed into them many times.

$50 divided by 6 years = $8.33 per year ... = not a bad deal !

Not just for corners, during hard braking you squeeze the tank with your knees so you don't get pushed into the tank.

Uhhhh.... YES! You don't have to have an R1 to get sporty. The FJR will do it just fine. I can drag a knee on an FJR. Being able to grip the tank makes it a hell of a lot easier.
