this week i used an '03 shorty windscreen (thanks, james1300, for the loan) for a 3 day multi-bike ride in hot 95+ degree weather on my '04 fjr. sometimes at a good clip. blazing sun, very interested in relative cooling & airflow. for the record, i'm 5' 9"

* shorter '03 windscreen works better for air flow cooling. enough so that i want a shorter screen for the summer. :p

* thoughts: might cut off a windscreen to about 1 1/2" shorter still than '03 height to provide max airflow. has anyone tried this??

* since i couldn't very well cut up a borrowed windscreen, i did the next best thing to test this and took off the windscreen, and then rode 45 miles at 50 - 80 mph. kinda made the fjr look cool, but then i really like this bike.

* the no windscreen option might work; and for people who complain about the fjr heat, 5 minutes takes off the w'screen and you can see if it works for you. no other rider has mentioned this to me, so i thought i'd pose it here during these 'dog days of summer.' TRY NO WINDSCREEN!

* so has anyone tried a shorter than '03 windscreen?

* post up if you try this screenless ride and tell how it works for you.

best riding :D

Highlander has cut his '04 shorter. There are pics posted somewhere. Maybe he'll be along today and post them again, but he came to the same conclusion last year.

I had a short sport screen from Cee Bailey on my 03. Loved it! thought it looked pretty cool too. didn't help with the gas tank heat but completely removed the hot air build up behind the windscreen. usually rode with it up just a few inches.

I have an '06 FJR and have been surprised at how little airflow there is even with the windscreen set low. Little or no engine heat except around the pegs. I have a VTX that I ride without a windscreen and have been riding that more often the last few weeks. The weather in SoCal has been freaky. It hit 109 yesterday.

That's why I have the Skyway spacers on my windshield. They space the bottom "W" bracket out so that I get more air under the windshield, something the '06s are supposed to have rectified with the venting. With my windshield down I get a blast of fresh air on my chest area which makes the cool vest work quite well. I can regulate the underwindshield air by simply raising the 'shield.

I like it! I see a short sport in my future :good:

What is this Skyway spacer you speak of? I have the V-Stream and found that i am MISERABLE in the heat with it!

Great protection in all positions, But even at the full down position, The air hits the top of my helmet (6'1").

I would like to "lower the top" a bit without cutting it...

great discussion of windscreen cooling alternatives :exhappysmiley:

any others? once we get this settled we can go for :drinks:

anybody else to try the no windscreen option? :)

TRIP, if you decide to try it on your '06 let us know your comfort impression

FYI - one other windscreenmod i've considered for bug deflection (live in agricultural area) is mounting a more angled screen on the top 6 inches of the stock '04 screen. [would look terrible imho] . effectiveness, it can't hurt because at my height, again 5' 9", the screen makes no difference in bug deflection regardless of position; stopping to clean bugs off visor is more frequent than gas stops. :(

Here's my shorty pics. Great for around town and shorter trips. Clean smooth COOL ( no engine heat ) air, no turbulence for me at all.

I may run this combo up to Reno as it's forcast to be almost 100 degrees all the way there, but may run my Givi to take some strain off of my back surgery. I'm not sure what'd be best , 4 hours of clean air with the airstream holding me up, or protected by the Givi, but have a warmer ride.

Either do a "Member search" or go to the "Vendor" section, click on Skyway and PM or email him. I don't know where the pics of the spacers are, but he can tell you.

They go under the "W" bracket and space the windshield away from the nose piece about 5/8", so tip the windshield back about 3/8"-1/2". He's bringing some to WFO, is you are attending.

I'm running the Cee Bailey concave sportshield on my '05 and it is very nice for summer. It's just a little taller than what Highlander is running on his bike.

I get a nice shot of undisturbed air on my chest and can raise it about two inches for just a little coverage.

I normally run a Cee Bailey +2+2 with flip and the sportshield is quite a nice, and cool, change for summer. Much better airflow for summer but I do get a lot more bugs on my helmet and jacket.

Here is a link to a picture of it. I have the dark tinted one and it looks very sporty - take off the bags and I have a sportbike. Sportshield
