I'm trying out this nifty little Dell laptop (Latitude D410). Problem is... nobody makes a damn case that fits it. It's just too small for every case I have found (so far). I bought the little bugger so that I would have a laptop that fits in the side bag of the FJR. But even Dell can't seem to provide a case that fits.

Suggestions???

What are the dimensions of said lap top

I would recomend value city if you have them, I recently purchased one for a hp and the compartment was to small, I only paid 5.00 for it so I just use it for books

I really don't think there's a pre-made case that fits.

Short of strategically placing socks at the corners of my laptop, I feel like it's a risk every time I put my D620 inside the side case. I think one could cut some foam pieces for the corners and make it sit in the side case, but it would make it a lot less convenient to try and pack the remaining empty space with what essentially is a laptop cock-eyed hogging up the the middle of a case. Although a laptop will usually fit in the side bags it's just not very elegant.

So, I bit the bullet and switched over to the well documented custom Pelican case. I did go with a slightly smaller Pelican case using the 1520 model (that was conveniently black) as pictured here. What's nice is that I store the laptop in the lid area suspended by bungees and have room for various other items I want to keep water proof including a digital camera and other rally necessities.

I recently did some work on a friends laptop, and it was still in the case that served him in Iraq for 18 months. It was a pelican, and the nicest laptop case I have ever seen in my life!

Defiantly wouldn't want to haul it around by hand all the time, but I can't think of a better case to protect a laptop on the bike.

I just use a nice laptop backpack. I ride to work most days and take my computer back and forth every day. My backpack allows for charger and all too if I take it. Mine cost about 100.00 and is the "Swiss Army" brand. I really like it.

Anyway, that is what i do

Laptop is only 11 x 11 x 1.5.

Average notebook cases fit okay in the top bag. But there are times that I need the top bag for storage and could use the side bag for the laptop. That usually happens at each month end when I have to carry 1,000 page financial binders around. They only fit in the top bag. No way in the side.

I've considered the back pack thing. I have one. But the summers here are HOT and HUMID. So the backpack and my shirt would wind up soaked with sweat. Admittedly I am searching for the "perfect" solution, given my requirements and climate.

I was amazed that Dell, HP and so many others are manufacturing these skinny machines, yet no one seems to make a case that actually fits the geometry. I spotted a computer projector case today that might just fit the bill.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll investigate them all.

I'm in the same boat... When I need to carry something else, I just strap my backpack on the back seat with Rock Straps.

I commute that way too when I don't want to take the top case. It's all I've figgured out so far.

I keep my stuff backed up, and I'm working from the assumption that if I'm in an accident, my laptop is toast.

Dell Complete Care is a lifesaver when it comes to that. You can run over the damn thing with a car, and as long as they can identify it, they will fix/replace it :) Don't ask me how I know.

I don't know about the case but would like to hear what you think of the D410. How much do they sell for? Do they fit in the FJR bags comfortably?

Just for commuting to work, I use a standard computer bag with the strap across my chest and the bag behind me. Strap length is adjusted so the saddle takes the weight of the bag with not much slop.

The bag rests between me and the front of the passenger hump.

Not perfect, but simple, free, and good enough that I don't need another solution.

Ditto on the "Swiss Army" backpack - mine has a strap the goes across your chest to keep the shoulder straps from coming off, no matter how fast you are going. Also pretty convenient for taking laptop on business trips - fits under seat or in overhead luggage compartment of a plane pretty easily.

I have a Dell D620 and carry it daily and I don't have a top case trunk. I purchased a Foray brand soft computer backpack at Office Depot. It has a cool zipper close removable inner laptop case that is just the size of the laptop and fits in the side bag. I put the AC adapter, network cable and mouse in the side pockets of this small case and it has a carrying handle. This soft backpack fits nicely in the other bag with all my other business goodies. I try not to wear a backpack since I ride so many miles each day, 130 to 250 a day. One cool thing is if I buy or want to carry something extra, I just put the backpack on my back and vacate one side bag for goodies.

I also have a Garauld luggage rack with a removable backrest. If I need to carry more I can put my big T-Bag or the roll T-Bag as needed. Seems to look good and be a cool set up.

I'm lucky to live in So. Cal. and am still riding daily. I have an 06A (best bike in the world) and have put on 16,000+ miles in 7 months. What is winterizing a motorcycle?

I had this problem until I got my DRZ. Then I got a daypack built for laptops from Jansport. It also fits into my FJR's cases :)

The dell m70 will also fit in the side bag. its a full size laptop. fits in a ebag backpack. its a little tight, but does fit. This laptop thing really came to light when you check out the shape of the bags. ST1300 bags dont have as many lines. Its much easier to get big rectangular objects to fit. Dell m60 will also fit but it not with a surrounding bag. the m70 cut about an inch of the dimensions, so its a more comfortable fit.

Ebag backpack type laptop bag for about 75 bucks is the way to go.

I wrapped my laptop with 1/4 " dense foam used for wire shelving and purchased at Home Depot. I then found an old portfolio envelope which was just big enough for the laptop and foam. Works like a charm in sidecases or topcase. Minimum bulk. The key is to have everything snug so that there is no bouncing.

I'm another that uses a backpack. I have two Dell Insperion laptops and each has a backpack. The older one had a 15" screen and in now my daughter's computer. The new dell has a 17" screen and a slightly bigger backpack.

Here's the new backpack:

I think I paid like $62 at the time.

Here's the old backback:

Except mine is red. I still use this one to lug around my school books. I think this one cost me about $60 on sale as well.

Both have a sleeve for the laptop and are well built.

BE,

I'll start another thread in the off topic for the laptop info. Or PM me if you prefer.
