...We don't take the premium channels -- HBO, Cinemax, etc. -- but every now and then they give us a weekend free...
Holy cow, you don't live in New England, do you?!?! The only thing we get for free is the notice that says the rates are going up again, there will be few channels on the basic plan after the new rate increase and the other bundled plans are being redistributes so now you need 4 bundles to get the same programming you used receive with just two plans.
No. I don't live in New England, though I did visit there once

It probably happens a couple of times a year. I get an email that several premium channels will be opened for a 3-day weekend. Obviously, they're hoping people will love it so much they sign up. We just record all the free stuff we can while it's there.

Yes, Fred. "Top Gear" from the UK is great. I tried to watch the US knockoff once and didn't get through the whole show.

If one watches the "news" on DVR, is it still news?
Personally I hate the (TV version) of news and would prefer a rapid series of root canals. But I know that isn't a commonly held opinion or they wouldn't keep playing the reruns.
I rarely watch the news, period..... it is surprising how much you don't really need to know, or matters. Somebody might tell me something they saw that was newsworthy, but I rarely feel I missed anything much at all. I won't win any contests for current events.........

Just finished downloading and watching every episode of "Top Gear" broadcast since 2002. Same for "Wheeler Dealers" since 2003. Same for "Archer", which is probably the funniest thing on TV.
Yo! Top Gear (the real one from the UK, not that limp dik POS from the US) and Wheeler Dealers are both great shows. I'll have to look up Archers 'cause being a TV troglodyte I don't have a clue what that one is about. But thanks for the recco!

Top Gear U.S. is abominable...should NEVER have aired and I wouldn't be surprised if the BBC had NO input in Discovery Networks creating that abortion.

Fred, if you have one, single cynical, smart-ass cell in your body, you'll LOVE Archer! There are truly laugh-out-loud moments in that show.

BBC doesn't "own" the distribution rights to the TG franchise... Jezzer does. He has an Aussie one and a German one (with Sabine Schmidt as one of the hosts) that actually work. The US one assumes we never have seen any of the UK ones and repeats their bits weakly. They need some new ideas to overcome their lackluster hosts.

News: Seldom watch it either. With the 24 hour news cycle, it's all hype and gossip. What might be news isn't reliable. And anything more than 30 minutes a day is gossip filler.

Archer: WOO HOO! Not only bitingly funny but maybe one of the best, recurring series animations (in terms of production quality) EVER! "SPLOOSH!" If you've not seen it, start with season 1 and move forward. The current season is a spin on the original plot and, IMO, isn't as strong on its own since it relies on twisting the character stereotypes previously established.

We probably have 120 hours recorded, and I know we'll never watch it all. We don't take the premium channels -- HBO, Cinemax, etc. -- but every now and then they give us a weekend free. When they do that, I record everything that even remotely looks like something my wife or I might watch. Then we'll start a movie and 15 minutes into it, one of us will say "Is this doing anything for you?" The other says "Nope." Then we erase it.

I had NO idea Clarkson "owned" the Top Gear brand...I would have given my right nut (the dead one) that Auntie Beeb owned everything it airs.

Yep...if you're gonna give "Archer" a shot, start with Season 1, Episode 1.

Dunno, but 80% is crap recorded off the Disney channel so we have "On Demand" shows when we need them.

15% is my wife's shows. American Idol, Ghost Hunters, The Voice, etc.

4% is shows we both watch that we need to catch up on, like Walking Dead

1% - I think there's a supercross race or something on there I need to watch.

Some days I wonder why I spent so much time researching that TV I picked out.

I have TiVo (love it!) and Cox Cable (boo!hiss!). Thanks to the TiVo transfer app, I can move shows to my iPad (except when Cox blocks them..), so I can keep up with certain shows while I travel. I can also say I currently have 124 items, (641.7GB) about a third of the shows are 30 minutes, another quarter are two hours and the rest are one hour shows...
