Some on this board have griped about Yamaha's use of cheap copper core spark plugs. Yet, Honda uses the same cheap plugs in its ST1300.

OE ST1300 plugs are NGK CR8EH-9. This is a standard copper core plug. Many consider Honda to be the premium Japanese bike manufacturer. Yet, Honda doesn't provide the iridium plugs as standard equipment in the ST1300.

From NGK's website it appears they offer only copper and iridium plugs for the FJR and ST1300 -- no platinum offerings.

Would OE iridium plugs affect your decision to buy an FJR? Maybe.

However, you can't blame Yamaha for maximizing its profits.

Pass the one hitter Rad! I think this may be the :eek:mg2: 'st thread I have ever seen. The spark plug influencing my purchasing decision???

"Would OE iridium plugs affect your decision to buy an FJR?" Put the crack pipe down and step away from the bike.

I wonder Constant, Yamaha might be using Nakahamajimajitsu bolts on the bike and not Bill's Bolts and Nuts. Would that influence your decision? Bridgestone tires??? Don't those fools know that Avon/Dunlop/Michelin/etc. are premium tires and should be standard on the FJR.

Constant Mesh, my father had an old high school friend like you. Nothing was ever good enough for him. Finally shot himself in the head to put himself out of his misery.

I can only assume your about 42, single, still living at home in your mom's basement and still attend Star Trek conventions in costume...

Ay yi yi yi...

:D :bleh:

Agreed, this is like saying "my fiance has a freckle on her butt...no way I would marry her because of that serious flaw."

I guess it's not that tough to spend a few bucks on fancy plugs and change 'em out, if you really feel the need. Not sure it's a big deal though. Had copper cores on my Connie and ran them 30K miles before changing, took them out and they still looked fine. Changed them anyway since I had already bought new plugs and the bike's performance and economy wasn't altered at all.

Well, she does have a freckle on her butt, and I'm not telling you how I know that....

More seriously, the spark plugs would not affect my decision to buy the FJR, but it does affect my decision to not buy replacement plugs from my local Yamaha dealer.

Now the quality of some of the other parts do worry me. The wheel bearings are reputed to be low quality and that makes me think 'uh oh, wheel bearing problem' when I hit a stretch of road that makes the bike sound and feel a little different.

I know your pain, mate. When I picked my FJR from the stealer it came to my attention the tank had been filled to the brim with one entire gallon of Repsol gas. I was furious, naturally, they should have put BP! Had I known this previously the deal would be off, obviously. But, since I had already written the cheque I figured it would be foolish to waste a perfectly good cheque (and the ink, of course!), so despite being very upset I took her home. I love my FJR a little bit less because of that, altough I believe I'll be able to get over it, in time! But I do admit it has kept me awake countless nights, gnawing over it.

Oh, yes, I didn't care much for the air that came OE with the tyres, either.

:rolf:

Sorry, couldn't resist! I just find it really strange that someone would pass up on this fabulous machine because of something so insignificant as sparkplugs. If it bothers you, just change them, it's not like they cost an arm and a leg (not to mention they're dirt cheap compared to other items we're bound to add to the bike, sooner or later).

Just keep in mind Constant Mesh that platinum plugs are made for longevity first not performance. Check a comparison of the amount of electrical flow that copper or iridium has over platinum. Platinum has lower conductivity.

Finally got around to putting in the Iridium plugs yesterday (4400 miles). Figured if I was going to check them I might as well replace them with better plugs. Got the NGK CR8EIX at Advance Auto for $6.97 each. Not a hard task as things go and a good way to get to know your bike. The original plugs were brown?? (I'm partially color blind) and looked pretty normal. 3 x plugs were gapped at 28 and one was 29. Did they make a difference - well, ya know how when you change something you WANT it to make a difference.....went for about 100 mile ride yesterday and the windscreen worked perfectly (no bobble), there wasn't any heat at all, and I could put the kickstand down and jump off at 5 mph and the bike stopped itself and didn't fall over! Of course I did clean the air filter and that might have fixed the windscreen...
