thought I'd share this since it could happen to anyone.

installed new oil filter. changed the oil. started the bike (a GL1500) and blipped the throttle. A jet of oil squirted out and shot 10' across my shop and sprayed all over the cabinets.

turns out when I removed the old flter the rubber gasket remained stuck on the engine. so .. new lesson ... check the old filter after its removed to make sure the rubber gasket came with it.

Yikes.......

but thanks. As a newbie to doing my own regular maintenance, that would not be something I'd give much thought too. I assume more than is safe some times. Thanks for the heads up on that

oldryder: I had to laugh at this one and wowser was it ever timely for me! I changed the oil and filter on my 2005 BMW R1150RT this morning in preparation for the upcoming Los Robustos M/C Meet and Eat next weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I own two of these Type 259 motors, I also have a 1996 BMW R1100GS, so there is no excuse for my being so very stupid.

Oil change went perfect, stepped to right side of the bike and hit the starter. A mist of oil squirted straight up from the left hand side cylinder, right on to painted sheetrock 8' ceiling and straight back down to the floor, Ingrid my bike and onto me!

******* Don: Had forgotten to screw back in the plastic oil filler plug into the top of the left hand cylinder. Oh Homer, Doh!

wow, and here I thot all you guys were mechanical gurusNgawds

DOH!

Doh! BTDT. Freshly custom painted Honda, stretched and rolled tank etc.. change the oil, stab the starter.. I've got remind myself to keep my mouth closed when thinking causing that mumma'chucka instantly sprayed about quart of finely atomized oil everywhere, including in my mouth.

At least its the kind of thing you only ever do once. I hope.

I always wipe off the filter sealing surface and wipe on a thin film of high-quality grease to it and the sealing face of the new filter. Cleaning stuff is a good way to check for issues....

+1, but I just use the old oil to lube the new filter gasket.

I had this happen once on my Blackbird. In a hurry to get going so do a hurried oil change. Buttoned it all back up, started it and let it idle to move oil through the engine and fill the filter so I could verify proper level...everything looked good. Well, the old gasket was still there and evidently mated up pretty good to the new one, and the under-fairing must have been catching the dripage. Well, wife and I takes off for a ride and something doesn't feel right. It almost feels like the back tire is going down. So I pull into a filling station (this is about 40 miles into the ride) and...!!! Oil all over everything, including the rear tire. Crankcase was down 2.5 quarts! My stupidity nearly killed myself and, worse, my innocent wife. This hasn't happened since and never will again. You only get once chance to survive idiocy like that - pure luck.
