Thanx

I googled it and found a some good information. Remove the bolt, pull the plastic out of the way, cover with foil, do the dirty deed, remove the foil, reinstall the plastic, drink a beer.

Punch a hole in the end of the filter, draining it will lessen the mess, stuff rags against base when unscrewing.

I use foil. Both for oil, and for ensuring that FD fluid doesn't get on the wheel. Usually works. All depends on the execution. Yamaha did my last oil change for free, probably will this one too. So it's been so long since I've changed it I'll have to relearn.

ftfy. I usually nap after step 4 and return to it later. JS.

I stick the long Allen wrench into the screw hole to prop the plastic panel away from the oil. Just wipe the drips off the lower engine case before buttoning it back up.
EZPZ and you won't get oil on your plastic.

Rear end oil, drain it on the side stand and you won't get it on your wheel.

I prop the plastic away with a short piece of PVC pipe:

Then I tape a small piece of tin foil to the engine just below the filter:

Keeps things neater that way. I also have a small plastic squeeze bottle with kerosene in it that I use to hose off any residual oil after I'm done.

I like the idea of punching a hole in the filter to drain first (with a hole on top to let the air in). I'm going to try that next time.

Take it to the dealer. I'm in a foul mood.
