Any tips on how to replace the oil filter without making a mess of the lower cowl?
I use the empty oil filter box for that. And I mark the mileage and date on the box with a felt pen. The beer seems like a good idea too.^^^^ Take out the screw and move the tin-foil wrapped plastic away from the filter. Use a short wooden dowel to hold it out until you're done!

Cover with foil, have a beer. Do the dirty deed, have a beer. Remove the foil, have a beer. Reinstall the plastic, drink a beer.

EZPZ and you won't get oil on your plastic.I stick the long Allen wrench into the screw hole to prop the plastic panel away from the oil. Just wipe the drips off the lower engine case before buttoning it back up.
