A Heli-Coil is a permanent repair. :)
While that's true -- permanent repair -- it's been my experience that they sometimes continue to be a problem when used in places like drain plugs and spark plugs where they are often exposed to repeated interactions (removing & threading).

They (Heli-Coil) are an excellent tool -- especially for repairing stripped threads in places like studs inserted into alu cases. In those uses they increase the strength of the fit and are usually a one-time deal. But (in those other cases -- drain plugs, etc), sometimes, one of the bitter-ends of the Heli-Coil may, at times, foul the repeated insertion of the plug.

Better (imo) to weld-up and re-thread (if not replacing the whole part?).

what is the diameter of the bolt you are using? Alternatively, you can try contacting these Helicoil guys here. They should be able to give you a catalogue or chart with all the lengths.
