While that's true -- permanent repair -- it's been my experience that they sometimes continue to be a problem when used in places like drain plugs and spark plugs where they are often exposed to repeated interactions (removing & threading).A Heli-Coil is a permanent repair.
They (Heli-Coil) are an excellent tool -- especially for repairing stripped threads in places like studs inserted into alu cases. In those uses they increase the strength of the fit and are usually a one-time deal. But (in those other cases -- drain plugs, etc), sometimes, one of the bitter-ends of the Heli-Coil may, at times, foul the repeated insertion of the plug.
Better (imo) to weld-up and re-thread (if not replacing the whole part?).
