My shop has 5 engine brokers looking for an engine, but no joy in 5 weeks. Bike has been down since July and I'm quite yancy and stressed. I look at the positive side like nobody died, nobody has cancer, wife and kids still love me unconditionally, I've never crashed (knock on wood), the bike imploded in my garage, it's been a great ride and has 103k miles.

But but but, I wanna go riding and fall here is the best months of the year in the deep south after the scorcher summer. Oct is my fav month to get on the road.

I still want my shop to do the swap, and he agrees, but, of course, won't warranty the engine...that's my crap shoot to take on my shoulders.

HERE'S THE ENGINE RADIOHOWIE CONSIDERED FOR HIM AND THINKS IS A GOOD POSSIBILITY FOR MOI...

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr,

Mike in Nawlins'

I guess my only question would be, would the $1000 be better spent as a down payment on a new or used Feej.

There may be fewer surprises. ;)

Good luck on your decision.

no $$$, big bro is willing to pay up to $3k to make it like knew, but a used Feej is at least $5.5

if someone will co-sign a loan for a low miles '04, then I'm good to go... :dribble:

HERE is another one with less miles on it and cheaper.

geez, good price...good feedback...I found 5 engines in 250 transactions sold with positive feedback

Sent Date: Oct-02-09 17:22:32 PDT

Dear southeastpowersports,

I am shopping for a FJR Gen I engine which it looks like yours will work as a swap for my broken engine.

questions:

shipping to 39667

I am having the swap done by a motorcycle repair professional shop who has done many engine swaps.

Is there any guarantee on the condition and good running of the engine. My mechanic will do compression, leak down tests, etc to satisfy himself that it's a good engine to do the labor.

Did you personally run the engine to guarantee it is in good working order.

I see your feedback is good and in the first 250 transactions I checked, you sold 5 engines with good feedback.

I'm interested: convince me to purchase this engine from you.

Thanx

Mike Oliver

Dear mholiver

well as you said with my feedback, i dont sell junk, that is all we have is feedback, if you cant trust a seller with 25000 transaction and been on ebay for nearly 10 years who can you trust? by you asking these question about the engine, does it get you anywhere? nope, i could still lie and tell you whatever you want to hear. bottom line, i dont care if you buy the engine or not. i sell over $40000 a month on ebay. i dont have time to blow smoke up your a**. i have sold 8 engines in the past week on ebay, no one has asked questions like this because they know they can trust me. my auctions also clearly state you can return if there is a problem. so it isnt me that needs to convince you. you must comvinence yourself. $152 to a residence or $102 to a business. jerry @ southeast powersports

Kind of a prickly response to a reasonable question. Maybe he missed that section of Dale Carnegie.

Everything looks in order with that guy.. I dunno mike sometimes ya gotta "take a leap of faith" Mike.

To bad there wasn't a way of finding out just where that motor came from.

If it was me I'd buy it. But I've tossed twice that amount into bad deals several times  as mizz bust will attest

:jester:

thanx Barry...I am thinking the same and your comments are VERY helpful

I'm a finger snap away from pulling the trigger on this one

Leap of faith for me feels like jumping a cliff...it can be fine or it might not, but hay, it's just money

Best,

Mike

Well, someone has vacillated for quite some time? Someone will need to make a decision....

(If you'd had your engine repaired after the incident -- you'd been riding for a while already... :) )

I still want my shop to do the swap, and he agrees, but, of course, won't warranty the engine...that's my crap shoot to take on my shoulders.
If it's a warranty you want? -- will your shop repair your broken engine [w/new Yamaha parts (parts are warranteed)] and guaranty their work?

Even as a non-runner (doubtful?) -- it has much more value as parts -- rebuildable head (yours may be, too -- but could be much more difficult?), un-broken cases, etc. -- all these items are big $$$ from a new-parts place.

My advice is to (spend the money to..) fix the engine you already have (should've started months ago...). I forget -- did you get an estimate on fixing yours?

But, since you chose not to, any of the other options available to you have pluses and minuses -- you're The Decider...!

It's quite an appealing situation to simply unbolt a 100k mile engine and bolt in a significantly younger engine. Spending $1k or more on a 100k mile engine may be a waste. Spending $1k on a young but unknown engine is a risk. We make the best decisions we can with the information at hand and our personal goals.

The parts dealer with a 'tude was common throughout the parts resellers that I dealt with. A couple of 'how dare you question my integrity, I offer a warranty...' brokers got their engines back when they were found to have serious deficiencies and the engines were found to not be as they were represented. To their credit they did quickly and without argument refund the purchase price. The shipping to and from charges will be the burden of the buyer unless you are willing to enter into a battle to the death with the seller :assassin: Then there are the expenses related to testing the unknown engine, but best to be thorough on the bench than after it is installed in the frame. Even after all this there is the risk that the engine will run great but suddenly pop out of gear on hard acceleration.

Based on the number of miles on Patriot's engine he may be better off to invest some patience and get a much younger engine. His spent bullet will still have some value if he wants to sell it, repaired or not. Only hind sight will show if the decisions made were the best ones, at some point you do have to take a path and follow it. If Patriot can get Mr. 'Tudes engine properly tested before it goes in the risks are minimized. This engine has more parts with it than any other engine that I've seen.

Well, you pays yer money and takes yer chances right?

I would probably buy the second one, and then sell any good parts left form the old one. Might break even. I just e-mailed a guy in GA that I bought my bike from (he had a motor for an '03 with 50K) You could probably get it for half of the other one but..............higher miles. I'll let you know if I hear from him.

Otherwise, I'd buy the '05. His response seemed reasonable to me. The guy probably has to field a boatload of ridiculous questions on a daily basis (yours were valid though). Good feedback. Gotta have faith right??

Thanx much for pointing this out

and thanx all for your advice, opinions, and encouragement...

I just pulled the trigger to purchase this beast...I'm confident all will be well and I'll be on the road in short order.

<fingers, toes, eyes crossed !!!>

Cheers,

Good for you, Mike!

After looking at the pics and description for that engine, I'd have to agree that you've made the best decision for your situation.

Looking forward to hearing the good news that it's installed, runs great, and you're back on the road!

Bye the way ~ I've never adequately thanked you for your participation and support for the Patriot Guard Riders. Your respect for our fallen troops is commendable. You deserve some good Karma coming your way!

Hay Fairlaner, I believe I'd be remiss if I didn't, again, thank you deeply for pointing me in this direction.

Even before I hear how my bike's ressurection goes toward final start up, I believe you are a big reason my journey to ridehood will be a success.

Thanx,

Mike
