The only time I "got off" at a race track I was wearing Held Profi.  It was a relatively low speed getoff at the hair pin over at Beaverun in W PA.  And I wasn't on the brakes.  Full tilt at the apex on the gas.  Header on the SS touched down, lifted the bike up, lost the front and down I went.  THe Held Profi obliterated like a cheap condom.  Not only I could see thru the leather.  The kevlar thread cut the seams as well.  I can't even try to imagine what would have happened had I been doing serious track speed.
I personally think Helimot (old importer) was able to build a great reputation / mistique for held, but they did drop them for a reason.  They are no longer Made in Germany.  At least not the ones that are sold in the American market.  In my experience they are rubbish.  I've since gone back to Alpinestars.  Just my $167.00 worth of Held experience.
Thanks for the heads up, it's only during accidents that we really find out what our gear really does on impact. I'm surprised to read your feedback on the Held product as it is constantly refered to as some of the highest quality available.

I was aware of the reason why Helimot dropped them as they were no longer being manufactured in Germany, but despite this, all materials are still sourced from there along with final inpection. This is just a product of global competition like most other products we purchase today.

I am planning on trying the H-20 gloves next.

Coyote, TeeRex, FJRocha ------------ Larry!!

Enough already.

Just hate to read these posts. But it's good I do, if only to remind me how fragile life can be.

Glad you're OK

FJRocha,

Glad you are okay!

I have scraped my feejer up twice: once my fault, once a cager's fault. After the initial relief that I am okay, the next thing that set in was discouragement and depression that I messed up my beautiful prized world class motorcycle. Well, you will get over it. It is plastic and parts that are replaced with your earnings. Trust me, your bike will feel as good as new again and you will get that happy feeling you had and pride in your FJR.

The ego hit takes awhile to get back, but some extended riding in some beautiful country will get you well in no time.

Best wishes to you from your fellow rider.

Thank you all for your candid words of encouragement. I will need to regain trust on the bike before I go back on the twisties again... maybe switch over to the cruising side.... NOT!!!

I'm curious, did you have sliders on I can't tell from the picture. Or did they break off?
gr8eyes- no, the sliders are in my office waiting to be installed for the first time. They are going in as soon as I get the bike back from the shop.

I told you those Michelin Pilot whatevers you put on there were the wrong tire! biggrin.gif
SkooterG- The tires were holding on just fine. I have not take a picture of it yet, but they held on to the rim even after a direct hit to the guard rail.

Thought that situation was supposed to allow all the oil to drain out?
SkooterG- From what I can see, the case is penetrated through, but no liquid has come out from it. I'll find more when they take it appart.

Dude, gald your OK! Its funny we both live in Chandler but I have yet to meet up with you!...If your right muffler is damaged, I might be able to hook you up with a replacement.
vectervp1- Man, I'll get the bike fixed and we can go out for a spin. The right muffler is intact, the left one has a few dimples due to hits from teh side case. Thank you for the offer.

So, what happened right before sliding on the shoulder?
Ari Rankum- Honest be truth, I have no recollection how I ended up in teh gravel. I do remember the bike became unstable as I entered the turn and the loud "OOOHHH SHHHIIIIITTTTT!!!!" that sputtered out of my mouth when I realized I was going into the gravel. I suppose I panicked when I saw the other side of the guard rail and froze up in the middle of the turn. All I know is that I new for sure I was going into the gravel, and there was nothing I could do to avoid it (perhaps target fixation???) Also, the front tire was brand new and that could have had some influence in the slide. The speed was about 20 and no more than 25 mph, it was a low speed low side, and there were 5 more bikes immediately behind me (in perfect stagered formation), they all stopped behind the point where I came to a stop and got my bike up while I was sitting on the guard rail regaining my composture and looking for my heart.

...Did I read right that your (your body's) momentum was stopped by the ARMCO?...
twowheelnut- Nope, Pandora got pinned between me and the guard rail, I do not remember ever leaving contact with the seat of the bike, only that I went from sitting on it to resting my back against it. The last thing I remember was sliding my butt on the road going forward (feet first) and the bike right behind me, pushing against my back with the seat (gas tank on my right). Oh, and the tank bag rolling on the ground to my left.

Who makes the pants and jacket?
DocDanDC- The gloves were "Held," the jacket is a Joe Rocket Super Ego, and the pants were Joe Rocket Alter Ego. There was absolutely no damage to the boots... as if the feet never hit the ground, same for the (Scorpion EXO-700) helmet.

How do you feel the jacket held up in your off?
benneyb- I am very impressed with the performance of the jacket. I know I slid a little on my left forearm and shoulder (they stil hurts from teh impact on the ground), but the jacket only have minor scratches. It is still intact, and I'll wear it again for many miles to come. The pants (see above) are history!!!

BTW: I have an almost pristine alternator cover for you. Say the word and it'll be in the mail as soon as I can hobble to a Post Office.
Stef- Thank you for your candid words and your offer, I will have the insurance cover the damages, and hopefully the cover is "covered" by the coverage  I will probably not need it, but thank you for the offer, I really appreciate it.

Nothing can be taken for granted and everytime I suit up for a ride, I hug my little ones and my wife and tell them I love them.
TejasFJR- Yes sir, I do exactly the same thing every time, even if I am only driving the Suburban. You never know when the next dump truck is gonna run the red light, at the wrong time. This accident had also made me reconsider the hobby, but I came to the same conclussion, I live only once, and I better make the best of it while I am here.

The mishap happened on the first 180 degree left turn (going North) before crossing the river: >>>CLICK<<<

This is insane. What is going on with all these accidents?

I am glad that the guardrail and your gear kept the damage to a minimum to you and Pandora. Hit a guardrail myself and broke my leg a few years back.

I am happy to see that you didn't get hurt. Plastic and metal can be replaced, flesh and bones not as easy.

Hope you get Pandora fixed soon.

The strange thing is that Rocha and Teerex are both year round riders so you can't blame it on Spring rust. That said, this is the season for accidents as people dust off bikes that were in storage for the better part of the Winter.

FJRocha:

I KNOW people have said this to you before: The bike, your gear, etc, these are just things. Money will fix or replace them. The fact that you came through with nothing but bruises is the ONLY thing that's important--your gear did its job.

My gear saved me from worse injuries 2 years ago, bad as they were (posterior dislocation right shoulder, sprained right ankle), time and P/T were able to heal them without surgery. For that I'm grateful.

Now I cannot ride because for some inexplicable reason my back has decided to go out. I think I've got a ruptured disc--had one before and the symptoms and pain are the same, just in different places. No idea what did it....

Heal up, either fix or replace the bike.....and....take the MSF ER class. If you've taken it before, take it again as a refresher. Just my suggestion. I took it after my get-off--and was glad I did!

Glad to hear that your OK. Where were you riding-looks like a terrific view-glad that you didn't get to see it up close!

Well... Got the estimate on my bike: $5,959.40 to replace the damaged components.

I already paid my $500.00 deductible, and the insurance adjuster went to check the bike and cut a check for the rest.

Parts are on order...

Once a waiter, always a waiter?

$5959.40?!?!?!

Holy smashed FJR batman!

Cripes Frank, my repair total was less than that and I had to replace front and rear subframes and some $$$$ farkles like the PHIDs.

What the heck was damaged on yours?

Skooter, is your stuttering something genetic or does it happen from riding too much? :bleh:

5959 ain't so bad; my Connie cost almost that much after a high-side and the FJR is so much more worth it. Glad Pandora will be (excuse the expression) hitting the road again. I assume the bruises are all healed. Tell the shop to hurry it up cause there's riding to be done.
