Having lived in West Palm Beach for 58 years, AND also being Airborne {though I was never in an Airborne unit}  I think it's only right that I get to claim 101stpathfinder as my official "homeboy" with all the respect and admiration that brings.

This past weekend I left out on a BBG mid morning. I felt strong and even ran into Dan (neanderthaler) on the panhandle. He was in the process of riding the Lap of Florida. I felt strong and ended up on the I-95 homestretch about 30 miles behind him.

I pulled into my last fuel stop at Palm Bay  and felt a not so funny feel in the steering and heard the all to familiar feeling of toasted bearings. I had switch front wheels from the ‘08 to the ‘09, so this was the very same wheel that I had to replace everything on in Nebraska.

I was about 100 miles out, but decided to ride it out. As long as my speed was steady and my path was straight, things went well. Got it home and got some rest.

At 7 pm I left out on the unfarkled ‘18

and rode BBG #2. I pushed fuel stops the whole way and was able to average nearly 260 miles a tank. My stops came at 38 to 54 miles on reserve. I made the BBG with minimal stops and finish up at a little less than 22 hours.

This was BBGs #58 and #59 for the year. I have 8 BBGs left for the year.

It was great seeing you up there Tony.  Sucks about the bearings but you are amassing a lot of spares in the form of complete bikes.  You FJR guys are fortunate that so much is compatible between bikes

The '09 had new wheel bearings this spring.  Rear wheel are the originals.

Jim, it was the front wheel off the ‘08.

I had switched them when I had to tighten the valve stem. For some reason I think my free arm torque sensor is not working right (I must be getting the axel nut too tight.) Everything was just replaced on that wheel.

Unless you have gorilla arms, I doubt that you wrecked the new bearings by over tightening.  More likely that the replacement ones were bad out of the box, damaged during installation or not installed correctly - not fully seated.

I understand, just wanted to mention it if you want to switch back.

BBG #60 (2019)

I left out last night about 7:30 pm in my usual unprepared manner.  As a result, I completed the wettest BBG that I have ever ridden.  About 16 of the 22 hours were in heavy rains and nasty winds. That’s what usually occurs during a tropical storm.

My KLIM gear failed and as temperatures dropped into the high 50s, I was soaked and shivering. As I passed by motels, the temptation grew to pack it in, but I stuck it out. So now only 7 BBGs remain for the year.

All I need to know Tony.

High $$ gear fails when needed.

I appreciate your brutal honesty.

Still looking for the 'does it all' gear.

And Congrats.

I’ve found wearing (or similar to) the aerostitch windproof inner shell, triple digit rain covers and frogg togg bottoms under the ”waterproof” gear is the only thing(s) that really work. Limited to no zippers for entry, a straight overall shell and overall lower cost $$. If/when water breaks past the premium outerwear, that second barrier is a godsend. ;)

Great job on the BBG’s!

My home computer was swept clean and rain running down the cord knocked my cell phone out about 10 days ago while recharging on a ride. All photos seem to be lost with receipts next to odometer. I had to replace my SPOT again.

Seems nothing is coming easy in these closing times. Even the BBGs are becoming challenging. I have been waiting for my longest month to be certified to know where I am at... I believe i have 5 more BBGs to do. Since I am doing the 4 seasons ride, the winter solstice should be my last one.

In keeping with my current trend, I made yesterday’s BBG very difficult. I put the ‘05 side cases on the ‘09 and packed away all the cold weather gear into them... then promptly forgot the key at home.

Temps dipped into the high 30’s and this rider had to dig deep to complete the ride. In the end BBG #63 for 2019 was completed. Only 4 more!

How much more to make 100K by the end of the yr?  Is the '09 working out for you OK?  Hope so, that bike was good to me.Di

Did you see our RTE in Dec?  In the Southeast section...

All of my mileage calculations are held up waiting for my “Longest Month” certification. My phone took in water on a ride and all my photos of receipts next to odometer were lost except the ones I had already emailed to myself.

Today I finally got my computer hooked up. I am trying to recover what documentation I have to submit the rides for certification. I have all the receipts, most SPOT tracks and I will do maps. When I am finished, I hope to be current with my submissions by days end.

I seem to have broken the ‘09s rear subframe. I hope to modify the set up by weeks end. I am still riding it and it is set up for finishing the rides with tires and fresh oil. I have the bike at just under 140k now. I have to be close to the 100k mark now.  I still need to run 4 more BBGs, the Winter Solstice ride is most important.

I will check out the RTE now.

BTW Send me a text... I have lost all contacts.
