Now, back to the OP, you guys responding have all made a mistake, and I think maybe Jasen has too.
Now Fred, I don't think I said anything about a trade-in, did I? I only suggested that if the lady is suggesting you go buy a bike, you better damn well go buy a bike!

Nobody ever said you had to trade in your sparkly new, w/a paltry 50k miles on it, only my an old lady/man on sunny weekends AE.

What she was telling you was to go out and buy a new second bike! Keep the AE and buy yourself another one that will help you deal with the advanced age of your old FJR (and yourself) in these middle aged years.

As for Bounce's retirement doom and gloom... How old are you now, and how old do you expect to get? And most importantly, how much coin do you need to leave for your old lady when you check out?

I would never forfeit enjoyment of my life for the promise of a wonderful retirement. Lots'a guys never make it there.
Fred, you must have missed my comment about wanting to buy my buddy's 990 SuperDuke.

Not happening though.

Yep, had a harsh reminder of not making it to retirement this past week. Felt like an *** because a friend called me on April 1 to tell us another friend of ours passed away in a car accident and I asked "Is this an April Fools joke?" I felt like an *** but I really hoped that my friend was that sick and twisted. Instead a 31 year old woman who'd been working her *** off at work and getting her degree left behind her husband, a 6 year old child and a 2 year old child.

Screw retirement, have fun now, hug your spouse now, and play with your kids now.

But...still, no new FJR for me. Sorry for the Debbie Downer. Keep having fun though, heck, I even posted this on a Friday!

Jasen, she might just be worried that you are riding an old worn out motorcycle. She might be concerned about safety and reliability. Or maybe not.

Mrs. Redfish does not like motorcycles but she has never interfered with my bike time or money. She has never given me any grief over what I consider a very selfish hobby.

My old 750 Suzuki had been in the service department at the dealership for 2 long unhappy months. It had been out for about a week and I was riding it everywhere. I was so happy to have my bike back. I was running errands and decided to meet Mrs. Redfish for lunch since that is always a good way to earn points. As we chatted over lunch I noticed that my left foot was covered in oil. Mrs. Redfish looked down at my oil covered foot and then raised her eyes to mine. I just knew the butt chewing was about to start and I braced myself for the battle.

"Did that oil come out of your bike?" she asked.

"Only place it could have come from." I replied.

"You know I don't like the motorcycle anyway and I cannot stand the thought of you riding one that is not safe." she said.

"And just what the hell do you expect me to do?" I growled, bracing myself for the never ending argument.

"Go buy a new one. You have a responsibility to me and to our son. If you have to ride a motorcycle it has to be safe and reliable."

She has never been anything but supportive even though she does not like motorcycles. She does not keep score. Perhaps Mrs. Gixxerjasen is looking out for your best interest as well. Sometimes they get that way.

You could be right. A while back, I'd given up riding on the street and traded my street bike for a track bike. After a while, that wasn't enough and I needed to ride. I was lusting after a weestrom something awful. Out of the blue she came to me and said "I hate seeing you all depressed from not riding, how about if I buy you the VStrom you've been looking at?"

That was a big moment. We ended up making a stupid move across the country to land of the cold and it didn't happen, but still, she was thinking of me and knows how much a part of my life it is.

This is the (only) nicest thing I have ever read you say about her. I am touched!

I saved for a couple of years before I bought my 08. Savings were for a new roof, but that can wait.

The 08 just flipped 60k a few weeks ago. When I wear it out I'll get a gen 3 (or 4) with the current roof money ;)

Holy Crap! I thought you decided that you didn't "need" the upgrade. I'm going to have to let my wife read this thread.

I will have to make it clear, of course, that there's hardly any "safety" improvement unless I get the ES version. You never know when electronic suspension will save you. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Knew I'd get someone.

That's not mine, it's the one on display at the Yamaha tent at MotoGP. What happened was I went to the races, no new bike.

I kinda like this one though.

But old faithful got me there and back, and someone upstairs kept me out of rain all day long.

I made the mistake of RIDING one of those FZ09's at Daytona last month. Now I can't stop thinking about it. What a machine. You look good on it, dude. Fits you well. Jason, what did you think of it when ya drove it? Your opinion on its appearance?

Drove it? Rode it? All I did was sit on the thing. They were just on display, no test rides. Thank goodness because if there were test rides you know I'd have been molested by ScooterG!

It's pretty sweet. Though, if I were to pick one up, it'd be to be a toy, and I'd probably spend less money on a supermoto instead. But that's just me. It's a very nice lightweight bike. I bet it's agile as all get out. It'd be perfect for quick afternoon jaunts from my sister's place in North Georgia. Here in Texas though I need the supertanker gas tank on the FJR to get anywhere.

Track days, twisties, curbs, stairs, the mall, whatever. :D

I WILL own one again!

I will say having ridden the FZ09 under the watchful gaze of SkooterG that it is pure fun. While I have no doubt that the Supermoto is a blast, the song that is sung by that 3 cylinder Yamaha makes up for the difference. The TORQUE of that thing was just intoxicating. We each like what we like and I like that FZ09. If there was any money for an additional bike, that would be near the top of my list.

Plus, it just looks cool.

I wanted to ride the red one in this pic because it just looked so good to me. But the goofy looking guy in this pic said, "NO!"

SkooterG said to ride the gray one. So I did. At least my helmet matched it better.
