Geez, as if I didn't need ANOTHER reason tempting me toward one of those sweet 2014's. I've avoided any deals I've found on this color, but for $300 shipped in my size, I had to bite.

Besides... The red Aerostitch will fade after a couple of years and won't match anymore. I have seen this color fade to almost a dark pink after many years of heavy service.

Yea, when I sold my FZ1, the guy who picked it up was in his stitch. I commented that it took a real man to wear pink and purple. He heatedly replied that it was red and blue! Apparently 10 years of riding had faded it quite a bit. Seeing that made me strike red off the list. However, after searching for over a year for one in my size that folks didn't want almost new prices for, I couldn't pass this one up for the price.

C'mon Fred, is it ghey to look for every excuse to buy a new bike?

Rode the silver one to work today. The roadcrafter will have to wait for a trip or cooler weather, the Olympia AirGlides are where it's at for a Texas Summer.

The choice of "enjoy it all now - you may not live to retirement" or "I dare not enjoy my life or I'll be poor when I'm old" is generally a false choice. I get no grief over replacing a bike, because it's usually years between such purchases and I ride the things all the time. I even got no grief when I bought the airplane, and still don't. (BTW, you ain't never bought a farkle until you've bought an airplane farkle - but I digress.) We've made "splurge" choices consistent with our ability to save for our decrepit years.

We currently live in a neighborhood that includes a number of people than apparently gave no thought to the future. Now they're old, infirm - and broke. They're on one form of dole or another. The woman across the street is in her 60's, hasn't been employed for decades, owns the house she lives in, but is supported by SS "disability" and - her MOTHER. We have to upgrade our community water system to the tune of a few thousand dollars per homeowner due to years of underfunding maintenance, and these people are screaming how we're being unfair to them.

Spoken lyric by a woman in a Simon & Garfunkel tune: "An old person without money is pathetic".

along the lines of "she's keeping score, you just don't know it yet".....

I've purchased 5 motorcycles in the last 5 years - all except 1 (the FZ1) were bought used. Total cost for all 5 was $27,900, or maybe about the same as a new Camry or Accord. All along the way the better half had been smiling, accomodating, understanding, whatever.....

Then about 8 months ago she has determined that she MUST have a nav system in her car - at the time she's driving a low mileage G35 coupe which I absolutely loved. But it doesn't have a navigation system so it must go. I fought for about a month, reminding her all the time about how great Google Maps is on her iPhone, its updated all the time, doesn't cost $150 for a CD to update the map, etc.... all to no avail. Finally she throws down the "you've bought all those motorcycles and I didn't say anything - why are you arguing with me now?"

So end of the story - we trade in the '06 G35 for an '08 G37 (with nav), and get to throw in $20k for the pleasure (almost the same mileage too!). Probably the most expensive navigation system ever sold/purchased.

Sam's right - its a test!!!

Sorry I came to this thread so late - it defintely hit a nerve!

Dang Russ, that does suck. Wife is driving her CRV into the ground. She's looking for work still, and as soon as she gets a job I'm pushing her to get a new car. Just had to dump $500 into new rear bearings. I can see a lot of other things that need attention on her 130K+ mile car, so I'd like to see her in something more modern and newer that doesn't have issues starting to crop up.

My stupid SH__46 error has popped up again. Sigh.

Wow, Russ.

I'd be fuming over that one. Imagine trading an 2011 FJR for a 2014 FJR with something YOU just had to have, let's say it was the cruise... and paying out that kind of money. Then add to that the miles are about the same? OUCH.

I know there's a difference between trade in and retail, but what's the actual difference in retail dollars between the two cars? Are we comparing apples to apples? Is this indeed the same car? I don't know much about G37 vs G35.

Jason: let's say you sold her CRV and got her one that was 3 years newer (and hopefully lower miles). What might that cost?

Only Jasen can decide if it is worth it to him to get a new bike. Only Jasen can know what is best not just for him, but for his family.

Now that we have that out of the way...

All it takes is money. If you don't have enough, go earn more. You don't really need it all at once anyway, the bank has plenty. You can use the bank's money and pay it back a little at a time. If you don't send it one month they will send you a nice letter reminding you to send the money. I promise you they want the money, they don't want the bike.

I have no problem with the idea of upgrading from a G35 to a G37. I have driven both and think the G37 is one of the best cars a wife could want. I came very close to getting one for Mrs. Redfish but she chose a different path.

If Mrs. Gixxerjasen needs a new vehicle more than Mr. Gixxerjasen does then Mr. Gixxerjasen will make the right decision. However! If the AE is giving problems and there is a need to upgrade/modernize... We all know this bike is used to commute to work. It is a tool more than a toy. A working man is entitled to own a good reliable tool.

Borrowing money for toys (which, for most folks, is what bikes are) has dropped off my radar. As a result, my "owe no man" policy has reached fruition while keeping more of that same money in my own pocket has gone up.

Anything that eats while you're sleeping is a bad investment. Did the horse thing for a few years and bikes are much cheaper and when you are done with them you don't need a backhoe.
