Sometimes grim determination and meanness helps too. Dad crashed his '07 in late winter of '08 bad enough that we should have totaled it. The bike was down in a ditch. Dad picked it up by himself, restarted it and rode it out of the ditch to a nearby parking lot. He managed to round up all of the pieces and pile them next to the bike for me to pick up when I got there. He had three broken ribs and was useless for a few months, but he wanted to pick up that bike.
