Long ago and far away, a trip was planned to Wyoming. All started out well but along the way life had other plans for me. That particular trip ended in Carey, Idaho but my journey over the next year would continue in ways I never imagined.

I write here today, still alive and walking, and in great part due to a group of individuals whom I had never met before until that fateful day. Their courage and dedication to helping others was the key in beginning my journey back into the living. I had the good fortune to be able to travel back to Idaho last weekend to meet these angels again, under much better circumstances, and thank them for everything they did for me and, most importantly, to let them know that they make a difference, whether they know it or not.

Many times we are like pebbles in a pond, leaving behind ripples that affect others long after we touch that water. These people left ripples in my life that will be with me forever and they will always have my undying gratitude. Here is the story of my pilgrimage.

My dear friend, Kendall, joined me on this trip for moral support and as my “personal paparazzi.” Many of the photos you see here were taken by her to allow me to meet my rescuers. We flew into Boise on Thursday night and the next day headed to St. Alphonsus Hospital to see my docs and nurses that took such good care of and believed in me.

Kendall amused herself quite nicely while at our Best Western.

But first, we stopped off to pick up a thank you lunch at the highly recommended Flying Pie Pizza a few blocks away. The folks there were very friendly and had the food ready right on time.

Seems they were very excited about my order.

Dustin was the young gent I spoke with on the phone and explained what I needed and why.

This gal was a little wooden but her hat was, um, interesting.

Humor on the restaurant billboard.

Exterior shot of St. Alphonsus Hospital – it is an amazing and beautiful facility.

870166682_EYcBA-L.jpg

We arrived at the ICU not realizing that it was only authorized visitors that would be let through the magic doors. I called in on the White Courtesy Phone and we were admitted inside.

870161210_vqDHs-L.jpg

One of the very first people I came across was Dr. Morgan who oversaw my care while there. When I called out his name and re-introduced myself, he just said, “This cannot be Tyler Risk.” To which I replied, “Oh yes it can” and promptly gave him a big hug.

870162580_h6kzE-L.jpg

I, of course, had to show off the handiwork of the grafting geniuses at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

870162998_yvY94-L.jpg

Andrea was one of the first nurses to care for me after my first surgery to repair my broken pelvis. She was adamant in her belief that I would recover and was a great source of support to my sister, Jaime, and daughter, Shannon, while they were there.

870163158_J9uFw-L.jpg

Nurse Elaine was another one of the warrior women who fought for me during my treatment to make sure I got the very best care I could. She often would come in to work an extra shift and I could see the circles under her eyes but she always had a warm smile and comforting touch. She even came in on her day off to say goodbye to me when I was airlifted back home.

870163471_CPyCM-L.jpg

Nurse Babs was a warm, wonderful spirit who gave love freely. I remember her figuring out a way to wash my hair with a garbage bag under my head to catch the warm water as it flowed over my hair. She brought in lovely scented shampoo and massaged my scalp. It was one of those “little” things that truly makes such a difference. Perhaps not “medicine” but definitely treatment for the soul.

870164544_5kHCe-L.jpg

I had wanted to visit with Chaplain Ben but he had the day off so I got to chat with him on the phone instead. Ben had come to my room several times armed with his guitar where he would sing songs that would make you laugh at times while others it would touch your spirit. I remember one time he came up and sang to me and Jaime and then we all held hands and prayed for my next upcoming surgery. He gave both of us peace of mind and heart for the procedure ahead and also gave Shannon a new understanding of spirituality.

Dr. Casos had been called in to consult on my case as he had a burn trauma background. I remember when I first met him… a serious expression on his face as he looked at me and said, “You have a very long road ahead of you” to which I replied, “I know… and I’m ready to walk it.” He looked at me for a few moments, I think sizing me up to see if I would be up to the challenges ahead, and then nodded his head and said, “Okay.” And with that he was a part of my team and I found in the days ahead that his serious demeanor hid a mischievous sense of humor that had me smiling many times… quite a feat given my condition.

Only in ICU can you show your grafts to someone with pizza nearby and not have it affect them.

870165696_hVSnj-L.jpg

There were a few others who were off duty that day so I wasn’t able to thank them in person. So I used the white board in the conference room to leave them a little love note.

870165226_jKrcL-L.jpg

And with that, we were off to Hailey, Idaho, in our Hertz rental car.

870167075_Mt9ee-L.jpg

Traveling along Hwy. 20, we were treated to some beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. I couldn’t help but hum “Home, home on the range…” as the vistas and valleys rolled by.

The obligatory buddy shot at arms’ length… lol

We stayed at a wonderful B&B in Hailey, The Ellsworth Inn (www.ellsworthestate.com). Roni and Vincent are the caretakers and welcomed us with open arms, a glass of wine, and some yummy snacks when we arrived.

Bitster (a bit of this, a bit of that) was the resident mascot and a love bug. I was trying to figure out a way I could smuggle him home but figured he’d probably be happier on all that land than cooped up in my townhouse!

870190910_BwfGH-L.jpg

Vincent kept busy doing manly things like driving the little tractor around the property.

870191370_vdHDp-L.jpg

We supped on sandwiches that we had purchased earlier, enjoyed an adult beverage or two, and then hit the sack as we had to be up early the next morning. The Carey FD was having a fundraiser breakfast/fly-in starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday (dang, these people get up EARLY!!) so we set off into the rising sun that lit up the sprinklers raining down upon the crops.

870171287_gRjic-L.jpg

We approached the intersection where my accident occurred on June 25, 2009. Strangely, I didn’t feel anything when seeing it. It didn’t really seem all that familiar to me although my traveling companions had much different reactions to seeing this photo – guess seeing the accident happen there stuck much more in their memories when they saw this photo. I regretted that I had put them through that.

870188745_CdtJD-L.jpg

We pulled into the airport parking lot (aka a grass field) and the first person to greet us was Dennis Patterson. Dennis was the off-duty fire chief/EMT that was across the street at the gas station when my accident happened and my first responder. I remember hearing his calm, soothing voice as he asked me my name and kept me calm. He always stood between me and the sun to keep it out of my eyes so his head was always backlit by the sunlight. He looked like an angel and I believe he is.

As he walked toward the road that we were turning off of, he again was backlit by the sun but I knew it was him. I put the car into park, opened the door, and without a word, threw my arms around him. We stood there like that for moments that seemed to stand still just holding on in gratitude – me for his efforts and he for seeing the results of his efforts. Tears flooded down both of our faces and we rejoiced in that moment of living.

870171420_paoEz-XL.jpg

I introduced Kendall and Dennis whisked us both away as his guests for the breakfast that the Carey FD crew was manning. Carey is one of those idyllic small towns where everyone knows one another and welcomse guests with open arms. Children were running about, people laughing, ogling of planes, and gobbling down a sumptuous breakfast. It was wonderful

There were some wonderful automobiles there as well…

This Lotus got a lot of attention…

870183475_xZzcm-L.jpg

Folks got ready for the 5K run…

870182645_bZAsV-L.jpg

And there was a kids’ dash to the bus and back which this little girl won hands down!

870182804_tygbh-L.jpg

Dennis introduced me to the crew that had been on duty that day and we shared many hugs and a few tears of joy as well.

870175991_DUmJa-L.jpg

870177135_2kQQT-L.jpg

Both Dennis and I were interviewed by the local t.v. station about the day and why it was so special. Here he is on camera, explaining how when he saw me on the ground and rushed over, he was quite surprised to find my eyes open and me talking to him. I found out that the rig was fully loaded (130,000 lbs.) and he really didn’t expect me to be talking.

870185032_KbHSU-L.jpg

After his interview, I couldn’t help but just give him another big hug… so I did.

https://fancyfeettr.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Pilgrimage-Trip-to-Boise/051510-245/870185279_QDvJU-L.jpg

Supposedly, the interview aired later that evening but I didn’t see it. They did do an online print article as well and a pretty good job at that!

https://www.kmvt.com/news/local/93866354.html

And then the St. Luke’s medical helicopter made quite an entrance as it landed…

870184133_RHTGi-L.jpg

Looked like something out of a movie or something… start theme music now!

870184236_HVVyG-L.jpg

This machine is impressive and well equipped for its task.

870186543_QEByM-L.jpg

870186674_sSamc-L.jpg

I then got to meet Michelle Harris, the onboard nurse for my flight, and Scott, pilot extraordinaire. They were off duty that day but drove to Carey to meet me and spend a little time enjoying the event. They are gracious and kind people and it was a real treat to re-meet them. Michelle will be in SF in October for a marathon that she will be running so we will be making plans to have dinner when she’s here.

870184593_kj7JA-L.jpg

And then we got a real treat… a ride in the helicopter but this time I got to sit in the FRONT seat!! Kendall got to ride in the back and push the green button that makes the helicopter go (well, she thought so anyway… it’s actually a signal to the tower that everything is A-OK for liftoff).

Bernie was our pilot/tour guide for the flight… he used to fly tours in Vegas so has a wonderful demeanor while showing a passenger a good time when they’re conscious.

870187151_BBQ5o-L.jpg

I was told not to put my feet on the pedals in front of me or touch any buttons… so I was a good girl and did as I was told! That’s me waving from the front window!

873529590_Rtts6-L.jpg

Lift off!!

873529650_rbEsX-L.jpg

Headed for the snow-capped mountains…

870187505_BYwTR-L.jpg

870187777_NVavS-L.jpg

On our way back, Bernie “buzzed” the airport and swooped over everyone. We were kind of sideways in this shot as we swooped… I hollered in my microphone, “That was fun, Daddy!! Can we do it again??” lol

870188003_cP5JN-L.jpg

Did we enjoy that ride? HELL YES!!!

873529528_gaeKZ-L.jpg

We headed back to Hailey and drooled over some of the properties along the way. I could see some day heading out away from the hustle and bustle of the big city to a quieter place with a little piece of land and lots of sun…

870189017_pyopX-L.jpg

870189228_ZAMDi-L.jpg

We passed through Bellevue and found the original city hall which had seen better days…

870190011_uKYC5-L.jpg

870189900_RYN5Y-L.jpg

And we ogled the local artisans and what they had to offer… wonder how this would look in the living room?

Kendall went off in search of thrift store treats and I went in search of the Wood River Fire Dept. who were also a big part of my rescue. Most of the folks that were on duty that day were either off or in a training session. I dropped off some goodies (cookies for on duty and tequila for off duty!) and was told that one of the EMT guys, Mike, would be back from training shortly so I vowed to return.

Turns out that the storage facility for the rigs was directly across the street from the Ellsworth Inn. I saw the rigs pull in and meandered over and came across a gent who just happened to be Mike. I introduced myself and he kind of looked dumbstruck… I have that affect on people sometimes… LOL We chatted a bit and then he had to get back to work so he carried my thanks with him to share with the others.

870190383_xmQHM-L.jpg

Back to the Ellsworth Inn for a relaxed evening…Bitster tried to put the moves on Kendall but he got booted before we went to bed… can’t blame a guy for trying! ;)

870191490_MPaup-L.jpg

Sunday we made tracks back to Boise to catch our flight home. Along the way, we passed a roadside memorial which gave pause for the poor soul who didn’t make it that time.

870192536_kQYqA-L.jpg

We had a little time to kill before our flight left so we decided to check out the Boise Botanical Gardens which just happens to be right next door to the old Boise penitentiary… interesting dichotomy of sights!

The gardens were quite lovely and Kendall was very knowledgeable about the various plants as we strolled through the different areas.

We didn’t have enough time to visit the penitentiary (so to speak) and they were closing up so we just drove around the structure and looked around. This was the security loading gate… kind of gave us both chills.

870200485_vcHww-L.jpg

870156578_oEJEt-L.jpg

And then it was off into the friendly skies, heading back for home and loved ones… I looked out the window and the clouds were surreal in their simplistic beauty.

While I have been experiencing a bit of emotional backlash from the trip and all its related memories, I am so glad that I had the opportunity to meet those amazing and special people who touched my life but forever changed it.

There are so many people here at home to thank as well, it’s hard to get everyone in one place (kind of like those actors who have their acceptance speech all ready and they get cut off by the orchestra!)… so I will name a few but know that there are so many others as well!!

My sister, Jaime, who flew out to Boise and was my champion during all the procedures (she has many a story to tell, I’m sure… just waiting for the blackmail amount to keep them all quiet) as well as stepping up to take care of one of the most precious things in our lives, Shannon.

And to Shannon, my beloved daughter, who continued to mature into an amazing, independent young woman through all of the turmoil… and for having patience with her mom when she has her “moments” and just letting me vent, cry, or hang on to her… and for always making me laugh.

874239938_Yxui2-L.jpg

And my sister, Cynthia, who always seemed to have the knack for coming to visit me on the weekends when I had a particularly difficult medical procedure and held my hand and cried with me and gave me strength to make it through.

874239589_REaH4-L.jpg

To my Mom and Ed, who came down every single weekend I was encased at SCVMC and are now on a first name basis with all the staff at the hotel they stayed at… I think they may have even named a suite after them! Their love (and Ed’s cooking) were a mainstay at the Burn Unit and I think the nurses were as happy to see them there as I was!

874239812_24nnB-O.jpg

To the Sue’s who were my pillars of strength and coordinators extraordinaire… their patience and daily smiles helped me get through the months at SCVMC… and special thanks to Sue who let me shack up with her for awhile… what happened inside those walls will never be revealed… but let’s just say I found Sue’s weakness… (Oreo’s… :shhh)

874461128_c47kh-M.jpg

John, m0t0-ryder, who always walked in with a smile and a hug… I remember his head resting on my stomach as he held my hand before a difficult surgery… and he took charge of the remodel of my bathroom at home (along with Stevie, Patrick, Scott & Sue Wade to name a few) which was such a treat to come home to… and kept track of threads and pictures and notes for me to see…

874239576_Tr4Mh-L.jpg

To Dorothy, glassgirl, for her grace, class, and fierce strength/belief that I would make it through because she would have it no other way… and for the picnics on the patio in the spinal rehab unit complete with my first sip of adult grape juice (which the nurse completely ignored… :D ).

874239911_HLkiw-L.jpg

To Audrey, Clint, and Leslie for giving my beasties a home away from home and taking good care of them while I was recuping.

To my boss, Bruce McFarlane, who did what many companies would not ever consider… held my job for me, gave me 7 months of “vacation,” and to all of my coworkers who welcomed me back with open arms and a wonderful place to work.

To the amazing medical staff of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Burn Unit who dressed my wounds daily, stop in for a story or a joke, gracious and giving every day, and always finding a moment to gently rub my itchy back from the donor grafts sites as they were healing. There will be another gala dinner benefit this year on November 13th and y’all are invited to join in (details forthcoming)!

To what I consider my extended family even though we may not be related by blood – those I have known long and not-so-long… someone asked me if I regretted riding because of my accident and I said absolutely not! I have shared adventures and experiences and met so many wonderful spirits along my journeys – both riders and non-riders alike – that I will never, ever regret nor forget.

I can’t thank every single one of you enough for all of the joy and smiles that you brought to me that kept me going… from balloon extravaganzas outside my window to 2-wheeled escorts from the hospital to spirit rides in my honor to bringing me real food instead of carrot coins (and having to gown up every visit!) and emails and cards and letters and stuffed animals and drawings and lions and tigers and bears OHMY!

And to all those who kicked in to get me my laptop so I could still be with you even if it was electronically – being able to keep in touch, see your faces, read your messages made such a difference to me! So many faces run through my mind and I love all of you for being there for me.

You were quite the sight from the back of the ambulance and had all the EMTs a-buzz!

To my friends at all of the forums, headed by Robin Patrick and many others, who stepped up immediately to start fundraising for medical expenses for someone most had never met. When I heard about the things that you all did for me, I weeped at the kindness from what were strangers but are now a part of my family. Thank you.

And to my traveling companions that day, thank you for enduring something I would never have wished upon you… for standing by me whether at the hospital or in the ambulance or guarding belongings… you each have imprinted yourselves onto my heart in ways I didn’t realize possible… we took this picture on one of the last days of my part of the trip and had no idea how true it would become… it sort of sums up everything quite nicely, don’t you think?

FIN

Thank you for posting. It brings out the emotion in me. An incredible journey of love, strength, determination, perseverance, kindness, duty, dedication, friendship and so much more that mere words can't describe! Bravo and hats off to you and all the angels involved!

Damn it, I'm crying like a baby....

We watch the news and think what a ****** world we live in.

But, this friend Tyler, is real life and real good people. Thanks for the reminder and keep on dancing!

Tyler, the very best "ride report" ever, and not a single picture of a motorcycle. I got choked up. You're some gal. But just one thing . . .

". . . We didn’t have enough time to visit the penitentiary (so to speak) and they were closing up . . ."
Funny penitentiaries they have in Idaho. Where do the prisoners go at night after they close? :D

ALL of you made a difference... do you realize that?? Every thought, prayer, wish, gesture... it ALL made a difference. Please remember that you are each the proverbial pebble in the pond... you have no idea how far the ripples you create go on but know that they extend more than you may ever know.

All I can say is "wow"! God definitely has a special reason for keeping you around. Very special read and I bet the trip was unreal. Take care. Painman. <>< B)

Tyler

Of all the threads I've read through the years in the various forums I spent time on, this one I bookmarked. Thank you for sharing with us from your heart.

I look at the picture of your daughter smiling bravely while her mother is laying on that hospital bed, a piece of raw meat trying to become human again, and I have to admire her for her courage. One doesn't have to look far to see where she got that from.

The pictures you shared tell so many stories my mind is spinning, my eyes are full of tears. It's obvious God has had a hand in this.

Take care my friend.

Brodie

What a gracious act for you to do, T. This thread is the best EVER, it speaks of love, pain, laughter, tears, and ultimately of healing, emotionally and physically. Tremendous.
