Try getting yourself on a joint suppliment such as Glucosamine with Chondroitin. You might have a little trouble area in your knee and your riding position makes it apartent. It takes a good month of loading up on the suppliment before you feel the results. The stuff works great for me as I'm an avid gym rat, and at 43 y/o my joints talk to me more often then I'd like them too. The Glucosamine well help repair the joint.

Good luck, hope it hepls.

I've had the Riley hiway pegs for quite a while-they do not touch down if folded up before the footpegs do. The lean angle has to be pretty extreme for them to touch unfolded, as they sit pretty high up. Two-up leaning shouldn't be so radical (IMHO) as for them to be a problem. And if he really, really loves ya, he'd have them without a second thought. He'll also find the chance to move his legs out to be a plus, fugly or not ;) See, I can contribute posts with substance too. Pretty ******* rare, but it happens. :p

My wife has chronic knee pain. If she / we were the types that insist on sitting upright with our feet on the pegs neither of us could ride long at all. There is however, a solution. Assuming you have a solidly mounted trunk, try wrapping your legs around your driver whilst leaning back comfortably on the trunk. It could be a bit awkward at first, he may have to adjust his knees outboard a bit (highway pegs are great for this). You might even get a knee and leg massage, I've been known to recieve a neck and back massage in return :) Works real good for us.

The leg relief he gets is due to stopping near some bushes every 10 miles........

And as I get older it will be bladder relief

Sherri & Andrew,

My wife, Valerie, also experienced some knee pain returning from Reno to Helendale. I've since ordered the Motorcycle Larry passenger peg extenders but haven't had a chance to try them out with her on the bike. I also considered Knifemaker's passenger floor boards. Like you, as long as Val is happy on the bike, I'm willing to make the necessary fixes.

It could be worse... Val and I saw an older lady sitting quite happily on the back of a Goldwing while she was sitting on the grass at a gas station (resting her knee that was in awful pain). I gave her a slightly worried look and said matter of factly, "I don't care how comfortable she looks and the fact that she has a cup holder, armrest, and adjustable seat. No way I'm ever getting a Goldwing!" Her response: "Yeah. It's no match for your FJR. I like the FJR." :D

My take: fix the bike up and keep the wife happy. Just keep us informed as to what you do so I can give it a shot too.

Jim.

Oh no worries there! I would never let Andrew get rid of the FJR and there is no way I would even consider getting on a Goldwing (sorry if I offend anyone, they just aren't anywhere as cool as an FJR)! I'll suffer if I have to! :D

I am very interested in seeing your passenger floor board solution!!!
Hey Orange ... check out my write up of the pillion floorboards by knifemaker. I have em on and the missus loves em. Much easier to move the feet around without hanging them out in the breeze.

Thanks Jimbe! I think I'll order a set of those to go with the highway pegs. Man, if I could only get this stuff annodized in pink. Garauld!!!

By the way, I'll be riding to Colorado this weekend.

I will be in Monument from 9/2 or 3 to 9/8 then I'm going to Windsor until 9/10 and then I'll be in Lakewood (Wadsworth and Yale approximately) and then leaving the 16th after one night in Idaho Springs. This trip, I'm not going to visit my brother that lives in Albany NY ;)

...maybe someday i'll let someone take me for a ride on my bike and then i'll know. ha! yeah right!
Hey, maybe you could take me for a ride on your '06... no, wait... then Andrew would probably end up wanting to buy an '06 too... we have 3 kids, one in college and two more to go to college in the next two years - something tells me we shouldn't be buying anymore motorcycles! :D

I think I will have to figure something else out. It sucks that you have the pain as the rider too. How in the he** do you handle that? How often do you ride long distance?

i just do. it tends to blend in with all the other pains i get while riding. butt, wrists, fingers, lower back. it pretty much all hurts for me. i'll try the tylenol when we go to arkansas in october. that will be the longest trip so far. my current longest ride is about 350 miles. someday i will ride home to MN and do 500 each day for 2 days to get there but i'm gonna have to build up to that. now that summer is almost over my riding will increase dramatically til next summer comes. i've never had any knee injuries but they have always given me problems. they pop and crack constantly and what i weigh doesn't seem to matter. they hurt when i was at my thinnest and my heaviest weights. so just unlucky i guess.

no worries Don. like i said, i ride in pain all the time. ya get used to it. it really wasn't that big of a deal. i am glad we stopped by the river when we did though. even though i hate stopping, i needed it.

You forgot to add that the view & the pics where nice too Mitch..... ;)
the view and the pics were nice too Mike..... :D

now what the hang happened to my quotes up there??? man that looks like crap! i swear i do know how to use this site. i have successfully posted once or twice in the past. B)

My SO and I rode 400 miles yesterday and she said that her knees hurt at the end. I asked her what she thought it was and she said that her knees were ahead of her feet; so they were too bent.
Not sure what we will dobut "pain" is no fun.
See! I completely believe that it has to do with the knee being extended over the toes (all physical therapists will tell you not to squat down so far that your knee extends over your toes)! I have never had problems with my knees and this just feels like too much pressure for too long a period.

Thanks for the validation! I'm sticking by this one! Tell your SO that we can prove this together! :)

Andrew,

When you & I did our little day trip (with a LEO award) from Cameron Park to Lassen via goat trails like Forest Hill & Mosquito Ridge, my highway pegs touched down a few times at the same time the regular pegs were touching during some lean angles induced by my bad riding techniques (leaning bike, not body). The key is to have the highway pegs adjusted so they will automatically fold up if they do touch down. That's why I had to do some maintenance on the highway pegs at the entrance to Lassen. Using those highway pegs are NOT for the twisty bits in the road, it messes up your whole riding geometry. I use them during long boring straight parts of the road, and if used too much they give me a bruise on my inner calf. Unless you have slowed down quite a bit after our last LEO award, I would start with the highway pegs BEFORE getting something that is going to touch down behind your pegs...that sounds like a high side get off to me.

BWTFDIK? Have a safe trip to Colorado.

We just did a SS1k 2-up and Tina complained of some knee pain despite being used to riding a sport bike. We have the extended pegs from Motorcycle Larry- they are very nice units. Mainly Tina's trouble came from the armor in her pants putting pressure on her knee caps. She was proactive about moving around at gas stops and during the ride by extending her legs to my side for a few seconds at a time. She knows when she can do that and always signalled me that it was coming. Those things seemed to help. However taking the armor out was the hot ticket but one we are going to find a different solution for.

On a sidenote, I've seen Jimbemotumbos foot boards and they look great. Nice units and they do not take away from the looks of the bike. (imho) They are very unobtrusive.

Let us know what you find that works for you. I am sure it is a common issue.
