I never even knew aftermarket clasps existed. When I couldn't put my helmet on after a hand injury I took it as a sign that I probably shouldn't be riding. I've never used anything other than D-Rings on my helmets, and I doubt I'd do otherwise unless the manufacturer (who has probably put said D-rings under a fair bit of stress and engineering) changed it.

When I purchased my first bike ever in 2008 I had little knowledge of helmets and related gear. Thus I made it a point to not get any head-gear that wasn't worn during a race by a professional. I still adhere to this philosophy.

If anyone knows of a pro that uses a flip-up/modular then I'm ears.

When I rode with my harley buddies last summer they made fun of my full face helmet. After the ride they had bugs & dirt in their faces. One of 'em, after chiding me for my darth-vader outfit, said a rock nailed him in the face. His wife, riding pillion, had to dig bugs out of her teeth. We stopped at a harley-biker joint to look at biker stuff. A harley guy not in our group came to me and said "dude, that's a nice helmet." He said he'd like to have something like my Shoei x-11 but his buddies would make fun of him.

Since harley's can barely go over 50mph then I'm sure there's no need for those riders to have a full-face helmet anyway.

I think the key point is "AFTERMARKET". Like anything with that moniker, you pay your money, you take your chances. We all do it to varying degrees with our "farkels" and being responsible, sensible individuals we "should" know that we are modifying a device from its intended purpose. If something bad happens because we made a hopefully intelligent decision to tweak a device beyond what the manufacture intended, we then unfortunately own any consequence. Free will is a wonderful thing that can kick back every so often.

I've never felt the need to improve the time and effort required to securely fasten my helmet with the traditional D-Rings supplied on my helmets of choice.. However, if I were looking for said feature I would look to a manufacture that provided that option as part of their standard offering. It's my head. I'll make the decision not to trust it's safety to an aftermarket gee-gaw.

I feel awful for the injured rider. I wish he and his family a speedy recovery.
