I have removed the dash panels and saw this unused connector on my Gen II. What's it for?

It's a thermocouple (or other such temp measuring device). It is used for measuring the outside air temperature displayed on your gauge cluster. It doesn't have to be connected to anything. For some reason, Yamaha chose to use an eye terminal to join the two wires (dissimilar metals, the conjunction is where the temperature (voltage change) is measured) in the thermocouple.

Thanks, guys.

I was thinking maybe it was an unused connector for heated grips, which my bike does not have, or some other factory option, but thought maybe Yamaha had the wiring in there for it anyway.

Anyway, I never would have thought of the thermistor.

Anyone else's always read 5 degrees high? Under all conditions?
As long as my bike is moving, it reads quite well (reads high if stopped due to engine heat). Some cars have a calibration routine to bring them close to right. My Gen II doesn't but I don't know about Gen III.

A foot above the exhaust header and radiator isn't necessarily the best place to put a thermistor, but I'm sure mama Yama saved a TON of money keeping it short and right next to the instrument cluster. If someone figures out which type of thermistor it is, they could potentially relocate it by extending the "wire".
