OK, I'm so confused (and yes I did search).

I get that Randy's harness makes it all easy peasy... And I read someone used Freeway horns instead of the Magnums. But I haven't found pics of either install on an 06...

Can someone help a brutha out?

I just finished my install with Randy's harness and a right proper thanks to ya, FJRandy! He emailed about 6 pics of the install after my purchase. Perhaps he'd do the same for you if you sent a PM. The photos walk you through everything. Just look them over, follow his printed instructions as well and you should have no trouble. Toughest part was fishing the lead from the right side of the fairing to the left. Randy recommends a coat hanger, I opted for a piece of 14ga electrical wire. More flexible and the plastic coating prevents scarring things up.

Good idea with the 14ga electrical wire too. I'm so used to using a coat hanger, it was the first thing I grabbed.

Gotcha, I'll take a look at that, although, I'm going to investigate sticking them inside a fairing or something so that I don't have to cut, but we'll see. :D

No room INSIDE the fairng for those horns...trust me. And problem #2 is that the harness is custom made to fit the aftermarket horns mounted in the factory mounts, although you should have a little extra length to play around with. Especially on the left side.

 
Randy - I just reread the thread from donaldb about installing the compact nautilus air horn. Did you ever install one on your bike and post about it? Good odds that I just missed it. I still haven't upgraded my horns and have come to the conclusion that I'm gonna and I'm gonna install the compacts. Thanks.

Jim, what you need to do is read about the ONLY proper (read safe) way to install the compact Nautilus and maintain fwd facing horns.

See? All you had to do was ask, and you find it all here

If you don't think you can duplicate the parts, stick with the Freeway Blasters.

 
I have a new 2007 and want to put the louder horns on it. I did an install on my 2004 last year in the location that everyone is now using.

I don't feel like working under the front of the fairing and around the forks and radiator. Has any tried to mount the horns in the center or back of the bike?

Don't need to know all the reasons why this is not suitable, just wondering if anyone has tried it.

'03-'05 WITHOUT ABS had a spot on the right side just above the footpeg. I believe this is where the airbox is. ABS models used up that precious space.

After installing a few compact Nautilus's on '06/up models, I found the only way to do it properly is to split the two components and mount them in the factory horn locations.

This isn't fair to say "your install is the only proper way to mount this horn".

Not everyone wants to split the compressor from the horn to install this. It isn't necessary. Several forum members have installed this horn on one side without any problems and the horn DOES face forward.

It is a matter of preference. Just like the choice to purchase your wiring harness. While you make a great harness and the instructions are top notch, it isn't necessary to purchase your harness. A person with some wiring knowledge can make this harness. I'm not trying to take anything away from your harness and would appreciate it if you wouldn't take away from the way a person wants to mount this horn.

What is important here, is the necessary modification is being made, and people are making the upgrade. The most important farkle to this bike, IMO, is a louder horn.

To anyone wanting to make this upgrade, you won't go wrong with this upgrade no matter how you mount it. JUST DO IT!!!!

First of all, how many of these horns, both Blasters and Nautilus have YOU installed? I'm speaking from experience when I say the only SAFE .....again read SAFE way is to split the two pieces to allow as much room for the forks to function without hitting the horns.

I've had '03, '05, '06 and '07's in my place installing Magnum blasters, Freeway Blasters, and the compact Nautilus, and I've yet to find a spot under the fairing to mount the Nautilus without it coming in contact with the forks. I give this information hoping to give people a little background on what to expect from the final product. That's it. Nothing more.

The pics I've seen posted here for the spots chosen to mount it in one piece made me cringe, thinking about how the horn will eventually hit SOMETHING the way it's mounted. Maybe if you just leave off one of the inner panels and mount it up against the outer fairing you'd have enough room. But MY customers wouldn't go for a shoddy job.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. After installing approx 7 or 8 of these systems, I feel my opinion has some merit.

Second.....WHO EVER said it was neccessary to buy my harness?? Not me! Personally I don't give a rat's *** if I never sell another one. Nor do I (personally) give a **** how anyone mounts their own stuff. All I'm trying to do is help by saving someone out there the headache of learning the hard (and expensive) way. I've said quite a few times how easy it is to make your own harness, but it seems many people chose to leave that to me. And I sure do appreciate that. If no one wants the help of someone who has done more than one of each install on more than one specific model year FJR...speak up now! You don't have a clue how many people email me asking how to properly install the horns WITHOUT buying ANYTHING from me! I assume you made that comment thinking I'm just trying to drum up business. Boy are YOU wrong!

Where are all the rest of these "forum members" pics of their install? Maybe when you see the actual installed location, you just might agree with me. :winksmiley02:

Now how 'bout we do this bickering on another thread instead of the vendors' section?

That black box is the Cali smog can down there on the 05. The 06 / 07 has the can moved to behind the front Vee fairing. That space above the swingarm pivot might be able to be used ? I haven't seen the size on the compact Nautilus?

I did the install some time ago on an '04 ABS using Randy's harness and Magnum Blasters. Twasn't difficult at all. I have used the horn on my cars maybe ten times in forty years but I have used the horn on my bike ten times this month riding in the city. Maybe not the most important farkle but way, way up on the list.

 
I agree the horn upgrade is one of the most important safety features you can do. Randy's harness is A1 perfect on my 06 with the Freeway Blasters. Although I had the master install them himself.

I make them up as needed. Currently the relays are backordered, but it's possible they might ship today or Monday. Just let me know whenever you're ready.

WFO? Naaah....looks like I'm "SOL". ;)

 
Another successful install of Magnum Blasters using a FJRandy harness. Since I am clueless and tooless, I had one of the local bike repair shops do the work. They were a little surprised to see the harness get pulled out the bag, along with the 2 horns, but even with the communication issues (I'm in Seoul, Korea), it went smooth, especially with the help of the photos!! The inner fairing cutting was performed with a small set of shears, and smoothed with a small air driven sander. If you didn't know it was cut, you wouldn't know it had been cut..that good....(plus the fairing material is quite soft, at least in the heat).

We test blasted the horns on the factory wiring before installing the relay, and believe me, they are noticeably louder with the direct line from the battery.

The mechanic had a Yamaha scooter that he has farkled pretty nicely himself, including xenon strobes for turn signals, and a 2 part electric horn from a Hyundai XG....(he paid about $20 for the set new). They look and sound very close to the blasters, but are a little smaller....hmmm.....
