If it looks like there is enough interest, I will volunteer to assist in planning this event. Devanator has also stepped up and said he could assist. Other volunteers will be gleefully accepted! Locations I am considering are Hot Springs and Custer, but there are other options too.

These dates are being considered because:

1. Other meets are being held earlier in the year;

2. There are quite a few afternoon thunderstorms in the Black Hills in May, June, and July;

3. Sturgis affects most of August; and August is HOT, with temps sometimes above 100. :blink:

4. The temperature in September is milder. Here are the average highs/lows in Hot Springs, SD:

August: 86/53

September: 77/42

October: 64/32

Most of the rest of the Black Hills is higher in elevation than Hot Springs, so the temps there will be a few degrees cooler. Early to mid-September is normally very good for bike riding, temperature-wise. And, normally there is very little rain in September, averaging a total of 1.3" for the month. May through July gets three times that amount each month.

Thanks for stepping up. Black Hills sounds go to me. All of those people bitching about super-slabbing it, just need to crank that throttle open and see the country. The Black Hills has great roads and has some great site-seeing places.

Not just a meet, but an adventure.....

Couldn't agree more, 800 mile on the slab, and worth every foot of it. The Crazy Horse monument alone was worth the trip and it's not even finnished yet. ;) . fantastic roads to ride 16, 16A, 87 tru Custer state Park, 85, 385 from Custer to Deadwood. So many I can't rember them all.

Big thank you to Jackson and Devanator for stepping up.

There ARE ways to get to the Black Hills and minimize the super-slabs. If you are coming from points southeast of the Black Hills, consider coming through Nebraska on 2-lane highways and avoid I-90 through SD and I-80 through Nebraska.

From the Omaha (I call it Ohmygod) area, you can jump on US 275 to US 20. Take 20 all the way to Chadron, then north on US 385 into the Black Hills.

Or, from Omaha you can slab it west to Grand Island on I-80, then take state hwy. 2 to Alliance, then north on US 385 past Carhenge (be sure and stop!) and stay on 385 into the Black Hills. Hwy 20 is an official "scenic route".

You could come one way, then go back the other. Both routes go through the Sand Hills in Nebraska, which are fairly nice. Hwy. 2 is lightly traveled; US 20 has a little more traffic. Both go through occasional small towns.

From points east of the Black Hills, an alternate to I-90 through SD are 18/46/50. They go all the way across the state just north of the NE/SD border. I've never taken this route, but I'm thinking it would be better than that damn I-90 through SD.

I voted for the 20-23rd time slot only because later in the month works better for me, but I could probably make the 13-16th work as well.

I've voted and its not even election day yet. :D We'll my bags are packed, I'm ready to go. This count down is probably going to be as bad as my trip to Hawaii for this December. Bought my tickets in March. But it's going to be great when we get thier.

I don't mean to sound ignorant but what does CFO,WFO and the like stand for?

You never know with So. Dak. weather. If you don't like it wait it will change. Summer of 2005 Sturgis had massive amounts of rain and 50 degree weather for half of the rally, in August.. So you can never have optimum weather no matter what month. Of course in June you can have softball size hail or even snow. Just plan a date and go with it. You take your chances no matter.

I've been wanting to ride this area for several years now! I've been to the Asheville/Deal's Gap area the last three years and I need a change.

I believe it's about 1,750 miles from Albany, NY to Rapid City, SD but I'm game.

Yahoo!!!!!

September is usually an EXTREMELY busy month for me. Birthdays, anniversary, and my wife coaches kids at he Special Olympics, so I figured making CFO was out.

Much to my amazement, my wife gave me the go ahead to attend, even if it means I'm not home for her birthday of our anniversary. WOW!! I will have to make it up to her, of course, but still.

I voted for the 13th-16th, since it would mean I would miss as little as possible on the home front. Figure an additional 2 days out and 2 days back from Northern IL. A week on the bike, that would be a first for me. Hope it all comes together. :yahoo:

One has to wonder if some of you guys might get a chance to hook up and do a BB1000 as a group on the way to CFO. :unsure:
ss1000, bb1500, bbg1500 any of them could be fun with the black hills as a destination.

From my house to Hot Springs, It is 932 miles riding the slab the whole way.I might consider this if someone was going that is in my area... Otherwise, I would take every back road and make it a 2 day adventure! :)

May I suggest this location for the group. You can get the whole hotel. They are motorcycle friendly. They have a hose and buckets for the clean riders. You are a 15 minute ride from Spearfish, Deadwood, etc. You get an exhilirating ride back the hotel no matter what way you come from.

John

On their calander they had the 15 of Sept blocked out. I called and they are totally booked out for a wedding. And they do not even have a block of 20 rooms available for us except for the week-end of Aug 31- Sept 3. Busy place. And the price for blocking 20 rooms with 2 double beds would be 140.00.
