I installed a PCIII USB with the Wally Kilburg map in my 05 FJR. I understand that it is a richer mixture but, when I first start out white smoke comes out of the exhaust pipes and a strong raw gas smell. Afer riding for a few minutes the smoke goes away but there is a lingering gas smell. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Pedro

Did you accidently turn the "Accelerator Pump" function on?

(i think thats what its called)

Did you also unplug the oxygen sensor connector when you installed the PCIII

White smoke is condensation, not fuel. A super rich fuel mix will burn black, oil blue or sometimes whiteish. if real rich, the fuel will wash the cyl walls, causing the thinned oil to burn off. The Smoothy map alters mix in the midrange and up, not idle, if you look at the map numbers, you'll see where the changes have been made. And as far as the 02, it only comes into play off idle, and leans, not richens the mix. The reason for a disconnect is to prevent the ECM from leaning out the mapped curve. Are sure you aren't just seeing condensate as a result of the cooler mornings? Are you sure the map is loaded, and throttle 0'd? Firm, correct connections? It might smell a little richer, Frank has always been a rich bitch cold, but cleans up fine when warmed. Check under the tank to be sure you didn't create a leak, especially on the return hose. if in doubt, disconnect the PCIII, just leave all in place, and reconnect the oe plugs. See if it changes the symptoms.

radman,

I will recheck all the connections. I had my bike next to my brother's FJR and there is a noticeble difference, you can get intoxicated with the gas smell comming out of mine.

Thanks,

Pedro

Disable the accel pump, and reload the map just to be safe. Could be a prob with the specs in there now, like a big number at idle/low speed, or a sensitivity setting too high. I do not run the pump, nor do many Feej owners. Only gain seen was major decrease in mileage, and, IMHO, the bike doesn't need it, as response is super without it.

Just installed my PC with the Wally map on Saturday and experienced no problems like you describe. My bike was always smooth and responsive and I debated long and hard about doing the PC thing but I do think that I see an improvement in smoothness and throttle response...or am I just hoping to see why I spent the $$$$$$$? Went for a 200 mile ride yesterday and the milage seems abut the same...slightly over 40, with some fairly aggressive throttle usage.

Also installed the Riley pegs today (teryriley at centurytel dot net). They gave very quick delivery and I think these'll be wonderful for the longer rides! Is my farkle list about finished?! How can it be?!

No way my friend, no way! Just hang around this sick bunch of bastages and your Visa bill will look like a phone book.

Just kidding. I'm glad you got the PCIII installed. I wish I could import some of your gas.

Cool,

Let us know what the outcome is.

You didn't fill up with diesel did you?

LOL! :haha:

No luck, reloaded the map and disabled the accelerator pump, still getting lots of smoke comming out of both pipes and an asphyxiating smell of gas. Reminds me of an old car on the road that is burning oil as well as gas. I am going to try switching to the stock ECU to see if that makes a difference, now I had doubts that the PCIII is the problem. Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Hmmm.....

Not quite true I believe. Assuming my memory has not totally failed me..........

One fine day at WFO-3 when I had the pleasure of talking with Wally at length about all things FJR, he told me that his map only made changes to the low range and midrange. From idle up to approximately 6000 rpm. Above that, his map was same as stock.

Well, well, well, that's interesting. I have yet to play with my PCIII on a computer, so not sure how all those numbers work, but interesting none-the-less, as I recall Wally being adamant about not changing the upper 1/3 of the rpm range.

Good God!

Perhaps senility or alzheimers is starting, and my memory is failing me.

Did you mistakenly misfarkle a vacuum line or something else under the gas tank when you did the install?

Have you tried the stock map instead of a modified one?
