PR3 Rear Tire WEIRD wear pattern

I had similar tread wear on some Dunlops on my Buell. Bump up tire pressure 1 or 2 pounds and it largely eliminated this.

I've heard this many times before. I even tried this on one of my PR2's several years ago. It was starting to scallop real bad at about 5k and I bumped up the pressure maybe 3-4 pounds. Instead of continuing to get worse, they got better. Really helped with the problem with noticeably less scalloping a few thousand miles later.

I bought another '07 and it came with 023s which seemed purdie good to me, so when it came time to replace 'em, I found T30 GT spec for $224 a set. https://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=33_82_1078

After 'bout 700 mi. I'm quite pleased with 'em.

So it sounds like the consensus is that the wear is a tire inflation problem and not a suspension issue.

You do realize that the Yamaha "spec" for 2003 Yamaha FJR1300 tire pressure for high speed riding is 36 front, 36 rear?

They also have a big concession for Metzler Z6 tire sales around back...

Yeah, maybe they weren't so good at figuring out optimum tire pressures (or drain plug torque values) back then.

Gary, I work part time at a dealership and so have a fair amount of interaction with a wide variety of customers, techs, and company reps. The advice I offered was told to me by a Dunlop tire rep and echoed by several of our staff techs. Another item to keep in mind is the accuracy of your tire gauge. Check your gauge against a couple of others periodically and always check your tires when they're cold not fresh after a ride. I've been told that your tires when set to a proper inflation should gain 2 psi over the cold tire setting.This is for street bikes, I don't know what the racers use.

 
Yes, it is important to make sure your gauge is accurate, especially if you are pushing the maximum pressure the tire is rated for. I have found that the digital gauges are, generally, more accurate than the stick ones. Also, a gauge is normally more accurate near the middle of it's range than at the ends, so a gauge that ranges from zero to 80 will be most accurate around 40.

Is that Gen I or II specs? My '14 is 36 front and 42psi rear.

Ummm... 2003 was a first gen.

But, sometimes specs aren't worth the paper they are printed on. I wouldn't ride this bike with any of the tires at 36 psi. With 36 in the front it handles like a tractor. 40 front 42 rear seems to be a happy place for most any (motorcycle) tires on any gen FJR, A pound or two difference possible depending on your mission and tire brand, but 36 psi?

Did the tire change this morning. Took off my first set of PR3s, with 16175 miles on them. Rear was squared off, but I'd say normal wear. Front had the right side worn more than the left. Mounted a new set of PR3s. I like the feel of the PR3s a ton more than the PR2s, and I got about the same mileage out of them. Interested to see how the PR4s fare with folks.

Did the tire change this morning. Took off my first set of PR3s, with 16175 miles on them. Rear was squared off, but I'd say normal wear. Front had the right side worn more than the left. Mounted a new set of PR3s. I like the feel of the PR3s a ton more than the PR2s, and I got about the same mileage out of them. Interested to see how the PR4s fare with folks.

Wow! If I had three sets of tires last 16,000 miles I would be happy.

Aye, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder..." I don't mind the look of the rear PR4 but I don't like the fronts, even though judging by the car park at the weekend most riders appeared to be using them. Each to their own.

EVO's are fine so far. Plenty dreich weather for them to contend with. Hopefully, Spring will finally arrive.
