Hey guys. I'm trying to acquire an FJR. I'd been dealing with Daniel Hice on his used bike but I think this is probably going to fall through.

I did find a bike, in the crate, about 150 miles from my home. 06, regular shift.

He says he'll give it to me (verbally) for 13,100 out the door. I'd have to pay taxes on it separately when I returned home (out of state).

What say you? Good price?

Also--is it true the at the warranty has been ticking on this "new" bike since the shop owner had to order it in his name?

Any advice would be welcomed.

BTW - I've owned in the past a '98 Honda Pacific Coast, and '00 Kawasaki ZR-7 . .

Look on cycletrader.com, there's an 06A with 800 miles on it for $12,100 in Cullman, AL. Making the assumption that your in the southeast since you were talking to Daniel.

Warranty:

From my experience, yes warranty has been ticking down, see if they will throw in extended warranty for free b/c of that. If you want to play dirty, mention to them that Mother Yammaha frowns upon dealers PDPing in their own names :assassin:

My experience:

one of our local yammaha dealers had a regular 05 on the floor about a year and a half ago when I was lookign at buying. I was thinking about buying it, but told the dealer I wanted an ABS. He told me he still had one in the crate in the warehouse. He then revealed they also had 5 more non abs's also in the warehouse. I asked how he got so many, and he said they did PDP's using the names of various employee's in the building. I asked about the warranty, and he said it was almost expired, but they would give me the extended one for free. I would have bought it, except they were unwilling to drop the price anywhere below MSRP. I thought that it seemed pretty shady, so I don't really do much w/ that dealer anymore...

As an aside, the other yamaha dealer in town has this on all their business cards and the dealer logo stuff they stick on teh bikes...... yamamaha

so I didn't feel very good going their either...

Get it in writing!

And make sure the warranty paperwork that gets mailed from Yamaha after the sale is consistent with that promise.

And go with that 4 year extended warranty for $400 ($389 from Cullman in Alabama). I'm usually very much against extended warranties, but this one IS an exception.

ask for a vin so you can verify it with Yamaha customer service in Cypress, CA. be sure let them know why you need the vin. watch their faces.

I got the warranty thing in writing. I'm supposed to take delivery Saturday, will ride it three hours home. I wish I could get the oil changed sooner--I'm crazy that way--but it probably will not be that convenient.

I think the recommended first interval is 600 miles . . do most people go that far before doing the first change?

I'll give my first impressions sometime later.

My first change was done at 56 miles. Some do it sooner. Just buy the oil, filter and crush washers and bring along a torque wrench. Change it at a PepBoys or Autozone parking lot so you can dump the used oil. All this, of course, if you are as anal as I am. You can also get an oil drain pan at the auto parts places and just throw it away. We ARE talking about an engine that you have spent allot of money on and want to have for a very long time.

You could also do the modified motoman break-in for the FJR (~25 mi) then return to the dealer for an oil and filter change before taking off for home. That way you're good to go till 600 mi.

Not a problemo as long as it doesn't leak B) If I hadn't done the motoman break-in I'd have gone 600 till the first oil change. Relax. Take a deep breath. These motors really are bullet-proof (except for the tick on some earlier models). There are a number of FJRs with 80-100,000 miles on them now and I don't think many, if any of them, are babied.

Spec on the crush washer is to change it only if it leaks.

I have 20 in a box and change it with every filter change, but what do I know?

This can be a guage of the dealer's service quality.

1. It's not an o-ring, it's a crush washer.

2. If they don't have parts in stock for an oil change, what happens if it DOES leak?

3. What other items are they skimping on during assembly if they can't even stock a $0.25 washer??!??! (like locktiteing the saddlebag locks)

You can buy a brass brake-type washer at the autoparts store that will fit and seal up well. It's resuable too.

Be sure to take a look at the new owners checklist before you go. Better yet, take a copy with you! Look for things like your extra lock, the saddlebag liners, etc.
