Nik,
There is a small knob on the right side (look up under the tank) to adjust your idle. This is meant as a user adjustment. Just adjust it when the bike is fully warmed up using the bike's tachometer.
Is it me or does that knob feel pretty wishy-washy when you're trying to make adjustments? I had to double-check to be sure that it was in fact the only thing in the area to adjust because it simply felt as if it did nothing initially, lol.

Nik, it ain't hard to adjust...you never know, maybe doing that will launch you into a DIY frenzy much like Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear episode in US earlier this week). ;)

Ok. Just a quick update. I made the adjustment.

@Burnspot, yep - it felt wishy washy. In fact, I was half expecting the know to fall off every time I tried to twist it.

But anyway, I kept turning it the wrong way the first time and killed the engine. I got worried for a moment cos the bike wouldn't start at all. But I turned it the other way and now have it set to just above 1000 RPM idle.

I can't really say that its solved the problem. Will have to wait and see over the next few days.

I shall report back again soon! :)

Hi all,

Just a quick update. I just got back from a 3 day ride covering over 800 miles. Throughout the entire time, I had no recurrence of the problem. I'll be observing it for another week or so but I hope upping the idle rpm did the trick.

Thanks all for your help! :)

So I decided to up my idle RPM. Couldn't really get my fingers in to the adjuster (not helped by being cold at the time). Anyway, put a cross-headed screwdriver into the slotted end, but it won't go in square. Turned it some, and I was pressing fairly hard to hold the screwdriver in.

Suddenly, the adjuster vanished, the screwdriver working on empty air.

It seems the adjuster cable is held in place by a plastic collar pushed into a slotted piece of metal. I had pushed the adjuster with sufficient sideways force to push it out of the slot, and the cable had dropped out of sight and out of reach.

I had to lift the tank to recover it.

Oh yes, for the record, clockwise increases RPM. And it has a very yucky feel.

I did the same exact thing and had to retrive mine also. That adjuster has an odd feel because it is a flex cable going to an air bypass valve on the TB. It's not like a real carburator idle screw where a half turn makes a difference. You have to turn it more than you think you should.

One other thing I noticed, after doing a TB sync, I used the idle adjuster to make a 200 RPM change and the TB's went out of sync. Not much, probably not noticable in the way it ran but you could see the vaccum readings had split apart.
