My search results yielded NOT MUCH, so I'll ask...

Has anyone successfully PUNCHED OUT their CATS? What I mean, that is, their catalytic converters?

In theory, I would like to "remove" the catalysts without removing the header. Again, in theory, I would remove the mufflers, and using some tool, reach in and chip-away the catalytic material. I would then vacuum out the chips, and re-install the mufflers.

Does anyone know the catalyst substrate material? If it is indeed ceramic, they should easily break up into little pieces with light impact pressure, no? I would use a scope camera to see that it was all removed.

Thoughts?

It's been done before and a thread or thread(s) are around here somewhere. (With photos)

IIRC, you have to remove an approximate 5"X5" section from the header, remove the Cat, and reweld that section back in place. Those that have done it report a big heat reduction while stopped.

At least those that actually RIDE their FJRs..............

You know what's coming next, don't you?

I find they respond better if you swing them by the tail..........

My 3 are to quick to accurately punch..

Cripes Brundog. You search like a little girl!
Found the following thread in 30 seconds: Clicky Thingy.

You're welcome!

No, dickcheese, I did not say CUT OUT their cats, I said PUNCH OUT their cats. As in, no cutting or welding. Just go in through the mid-pipe end with a small pipe and gently chip away the catalysts.

I may not be able to search, but at least I can read. Geesh! ;)

From what I can see It looks like the darn things are pretty stout.. I don't know if you can actually knock 'em out with a punch. I managed an 12 inch long section of pipe with a punch attached and a few solid smacks, but nothing moved ..Maybe some type of extension on a drill an cut holes in 'em and possibly punch out the remaining debris..

Tomorrow I'll finish pulling off the header an really get a look, but I think the cut an re-weld method is going to be the best route BD. I'll keep ya posted

BD,

I don't think you can punch out the cats. Looking at the picture in the thread UnkaSkoot mentioned, it looks to me like the converter matrix is supported by a metal mesh.

Plus, it's a good distance from the end of the midpipes to the cat chamber AND not a real straight shot.

I think you may be tilting at windmills on this idea.

Note: I am not looking to knock the whole cat out, just break out the substrate (matrix).

So are you guys saying the matrix is NOT made of ceramic? Ceramic is brittle and should fracture under impact. If the substrate is made of metal, it would probably dent/fold under impact, which would of course create more of a problem than solution, because it would in effect close the holes, increasing restriction.

Can anybody with a removed cat verify what material the matrix is made of?

Well ****, you're right. I didn't read close enough. I am sorry.

It just never dawned on me that somebody could be STUPID ENOUGH to try and actually *punch* out a cat vs. simply removing it.

And if you would have read the thread I linked to, and then followed a couple of links in that thread, you would have learned that material is metal, not ceramic.

Have a nice day.

Oh yeah,

Hey BD ...it should look like this when you get done.

:dribble:

BTW, that cat in post 8 looks exactly like what I punched out of my FZ ...but you CAN get to it in my headpipe. Might be better to grab a new Holeshot header instead on your bike.

I believe the material that supports the catylizing substance is titanium,..or so it is in most auto systems. Hence a scrapped car is quickly stripped of it's converter as it's prolly worth 40-60 bucks to the recycler.

With my(from work) MSA-Carbon Monoxid detector that cost like $600 i have found that with the bike fully warmed up it reads a negligible amount of CO from the pipes  . So i woulden't consider the surgery........Love running my bike in the Gaaarrraaaggge.....,..,.

Boy, that sure looks purdy afterward! Now, how do you benefit with all this.

No, dickcheese :haha:
BrunDog, I've same question that Big-D, double_entendre and dcarver had on the original post a year ago: What's the gain?

I believe that Don Carver said back on the original thread it only showed a half-horsepower gain on a dyno. Why do it at all?

Dude, all you had to do was type 'METAL' instead of wearing your diarrhea-ridden fingers out on your keyboard.

Likewise, :****:

but of course, only with

To Beemerdons: One, to reduce heat. Two, to slightly improve sound. Three, there are reports of reduced vibes and better low-end torque. I gotta think that removing those restrictions has to help. My thought was if they could simply be chipped out, it would be an easy mod. But, our *bored* admin from AZ straightened me right out, di'nt he?!?

Ok, Brundog; reading your three reasons clears up a lot for me. I know it is also hot in Florida, that's why RadioHowie is always walking around wearing just his man thong over in Winter Haven. Could also see that the exhaust volume would be throatier. What I did not know about, was reduced vibes and increased low end torque. I'm too old and slow to notice that!

In regards to our beloved and so precious admin from AZ; "that one" could piss off Pope Benedict, Mother Teresa and Gandhi!

Sorry Don....here in da South, we refer to them as "banana hammocks." :finger:

Or in odot's case, a gherkin jerkin.

Unlike Bustanut, who's jerkin' his gherkin.
