I believe the term 'quick fasterners' is correct from the owners manual, those little black plastic fasteners that hold the fairing pieces on the FJR. While doing an air cleaner swap to a K&N I ran across two types / two sizes, one was the regular pull-out / push-in type and the other had the phillips screw head. All but one came out fairly well, so I asked the local Yamaha partsman what the secret was. He suggested using a small screwdriver to get under the center pin to pry it out. Any other thoughts or experiences out there?

Last trip to the parts counter I bought spares of the two sizes for future use, does anyone know how many sizes there are and how many times they can be reused?

 
Push the center pin half way in (approximately), pull the connector out. To reinstall, pull the pin back out of the head until it protrudes about half the length of the pin – push the connector in and then push the pin back in to lock the connector.

Put a Philips screwdriver in the Philips head and turn ¼ turn. You may have to hold the plastic ring around the head to keep it from turning. To reinstall the connector – with the Philips head still out, push the connector in and press on the Philips head and it will seat.

If the panels don't align completely the pins may be a bit sticky to pull out, fingernails or a small screwdriver will do the job. If you go the screwdriver route be careful not to scratch.

Reuse the connectors until you loose the center pin or strip the Philips head screw :blink:

Ionbeam gave an excellent quick-fastener how-to.

They can be a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of them - no big deal. I have been re-using the same fasteners for quite some time now. I have only had to replace a couple.

There are three sizes. One of the push-pin, and two different sizes of the phillips head.

Its always a good idea to have extra fasteners around. Once of the first things I did after getting my FJR was order a bunch of extra quick fasteners, fairing screws including the nylon washers, and nylon windscreen screws and wellnuts. I would highly recommend getting the nylon windscreen screws, as in my experience, they don't have a very long life if you are removing and re-installing them. Also, get a bunch of crush washers while your at it.

 
+1 on getting extras. Didn't take me long to lose a couple fairing screws. Order extras, the cost is near nothing.

I've been afraid to tackle any bodywork removal until I had a better idea of how those blasted little buggers work. Now I do. :thumbup:

 
Picked up my special order Yamaha shop manual yesterday at the local dealership. The partsman commented that it's the thickest shop manual for a bike that he's ever seen (and they carry several brands of bikes). He also commented that you don't see many of these FJRs around. I interpreted that to mean they also don't stock many parts for them. When I asked about quick fasteners originally, they only had one in stock. :erm:

 
I'll add one tidbit. When I remove the quick release fasteners I've got two small needlenose pliers that i use to extract the fasteners with after prying out a little I crab the buggers and they come out pretty easy after you've done it a couple of times.I've got a straight and 90 degree turn pair of small pliers.

 
-one of my phillips-head plastic fasteners never 'pops out' easily despite holding the outer ring; I just need to replace it. One thing that has helped, though, was to pry up the outer edge with one of those plastic/rubber 'squeegees' (for lack of a better term) that is normally used to smooth body filler (like Bondo); it has a thin edge, (is flexible) does not scratch the paint.
